Questions for WM who have had thrush

We had noticed some white spots in DS mouth so my husband took him to dr. this morning. DH just called and DS does have thrush. We have a prescription for him but I am sitting here at my desk all worked up because the long term treatment to prevent reoccurance sounds impossible for a WM. Rinsing nipples with water and vinegar and air drying for 20 minutes, boiling everything (pump parts, bottle nipples) for 20 minutes after use, washing all bras and towels and drying in sun...

Any advice from WM who have dealt with it. Not to mention the fact that I am probably going to have to throw out some of my freezer stash.

  • When I had it, I bought enough sets of pump parts so that I could have a fresh set each time I pumped. Then I boiled at night.

Make sure you change nursing pads a lot too.

  • we had it while BFing, and I used the Medela sterilizing bags - which are a godsend!!  and cheap!  You can use them up to 20 times I think?  We used that nightly for pacis and bottle parts.  Just a few minutes in the microwave. I didn't dry anything in the sun.

We also used genetian violet (non Rx, behind prescription counter - you have to ask for it).  The nystatin wasn't working for us.  We took the Diflucan, but also tried the GV (1%) I think.  That worked the best of all.

  • I dealt with it twice.

The first time, he just took a Rx. It came back. The second time, they treated me with medication that I took for 3 days (pills). Simultaneously, we treated him with his Rx.

I now boil all of his bottle nipples, and all of my pumping equipment to sterilize. Just water, NO vinegar. We've been good since then. No more thrush.

  • We are just finishing up treatment- been a month now. At work, I just rinsed my pump parts after each use and then let my nips hang out for a few minutes after I pumped (doing that right now actually)- also change pads each time. At home, I go topless all the time and rinse with vinegar water after each feed. Each night I boil everything for 20 mins after DS is in bed. I wash bras/towels after each use which only added an extra load of laundry a week. I am not throwing out my stash- I read from a reliable source that chances of reinfection later on after LO is healthy is VERY small. No need to waste good BM. Overall it has sucked but I didn't think it was too hard for a WM to deal with. Certainly not a reason for me to give up BFing. Enlist your DH to help with the washing of stuff if needed.

We're going through it right now.  DS is on the Rx, I'm not on anything but so far I have no symptoms.  I don't know if that means I don't have it though.  I have been using an antifungal cream on my nips just in case (I carry baby wipes in my bag to wipe it off before pumping)  that seemed easier than the vinegar and water air-drying-sunshine thing.  I have washed everything fabric of his in vinegar and we use the microwave steam bags on bottles and pump parts.    I'm really hoping it clears up this week because the nystatin makes him sick to his stomach so he throws up a lot.  It's getting old.  I didn't throw milk out but I did stop freezing the excess, it goes down the drain every day.  Crying
