s/o baths

I don't have anything to add to the nighttime routine post but I am curious to know how often you give LO a bath?

Jack has dry skin after a bath so we only do a shower on Weds. (wash hair and wipe him off with a soft cloth as best I can in the shower) and a bath (deeper clean) over the weekend.

MIL is sure that he should get more baths, but why?  he's not stinky or dirty.  He doesn't have diaper blow outs and very rarely spits up (and if he does it usually just hits his bib or a burp cloth).  I think the breast milk is good for his skin so if he dribbles I usually just wipe it "in" to the skin with the burp cloth.

now that he likes to put his hands in his mouth so much I usually wipe his hands a couple of times a day with a wet cloth.

is this routine gross/bad for any reason?

Re: s/o baths

  • It's ok to only bathe them 2-3x/week.  You should wash the diaper area daily, though.  We bathe Kaya every night as part of her bedtime routine and because she LOVES bath time.

  • I have no idea if it's 'gross or bad' ... hmm I can only tell you what we do.

We bathe Brooke every night (around 4-5pm). She used to LOVE it, but has recently decided she hates having water on her head. Ugh :- We've just always given her a bath from the very beginning... with the exception of the first week we brought her home (or until her belly button thing fell off)

yep, his diaper area gets "washed" quite often since we use cloth wipes we just use warm water and/or warm water with CA Baby diaper area wash.  I have made it part of the routine to do a more thorough job before putting on the nighttime diaper and during his first change of the day.

he loves baths (and showers) too so I feel like it would be fun to give him more per week but I don't want to have to slather him with lotion all the time...

  • We only bathe twice a week.  I don't think he can get very dirty, but then I look at his fingernails and there's dark gunk under there!  EW!  Where does it come from?!  That makes me think we should wash him more often, just in case.  Embarrassed

  • We bathe them every other day - we could probably do it less often with Dash, but Will tends to spit up down his front so I like to make sure he gets washed regularly (we wipe him down of course lol, but for some reason I feel like he doesn't get as clean from that as from a real bath).
  • Early on, we bathed Alexa maybe once or twice a week... But around 3 months when we started her bedtime routine we started giving her a bath every night. She LOVES her bath, so we just stayed with it and she now gets a bath every night.

That said, we use VERY little soap and sometimes NO soap, just water. It's fun for her and relaxing. Plus she stinks after daycare!

  • We bathe J only 2-3 times a week.  When we were at the hospital, we were told that unless he's being touched by tons of people all the time, he won't be dirty enough to need a bath every day.  Stick out tongue

We want to start a regular bedtime routine though so I'm thinking we may start bathing him every night.  When we start that, I think we'll use soap maybe every other day so that his skin doesn't dry out too much.

J gets gunk under his fingernails too!  When I notice his nails starting to get long and starting to collect gunk, I'll file them while feeding him or while he's sleeping.  That seems to help.  Smile

Yeah, I feel like I'm filing ALL the time!  And using my nails to scrape out the junk.  I cut his finger when I tried to use the clippers.  Embarrassed

  • We bathe every other day...I just get into the tub with Libby these days (she's too tall for her Spa Baby Tub) and it's nice because during the week it allows us to have some fun mommy-baby time.

ahhhh, I forgot about that!!  I wonder how the heck that happens too (which is why I have started to wipe off his hands all the time).

I have really, really dull nail clippers and go to it when he's sleeping, but I still prefer the nail file - they just grow so fast, I feel like I could file everyday and not keep up.  And I feel so sad when he scratches himself because I think it's my fault for not clipping better.

  • in the beginning, it was only once or twice/week, by about 4 months it was 3x/wk, but now since he likes it so much, I do it every day, but only with soap every other day, so his skin doesn't get dried out.

is the water too warm when you give him a shower/bath?  Is that why his skin is too dry?  Maybe cooler water would help?
