Let's talk Thermostats...

So, pre-pregnancy our house was set to 74 at night during the summer.  Since December, that has dropped to about 70.  Hubs sleeps with a blanket after WW3 broke out when he tried to turn it up one night.

Is anyone else turning down the air in order to get a good night's sleep?

I am terrified to see what our electric bill will be this summer as I am close to wanting to turn it down to 69 and it is not even June yet...

  • We are in MA so no central air is really needed for most of the year... with that said... we are putting in our AC tonight. Big Smile I have been a miserable, hot, foul wench in the middle of the night lately. I have fans blowing on me and it's just not good enough. You are not alone in your hotness! I scream at Dh at least once per night to get off my side of the bed. haha

  • Not yet, but I will be PG all the way through a DC summer. The Man accepted in advance that we will be reprogramming as soon as I say the word.

    That does sound amazing!

  • Me. My DH and I just talked about this this morning. Typically ours is at 78 and I am comfy, and lately it is down to 73. He keeps joking with me about how cold it is. I am always cold too, so this is a first for me. My other pregnancies were through the winter and up north, so that must be why I have never had this issue before . Good luck staying cool:)

  • My DH fired up the a/c the other day to make sure all was working well.  The last couple of days the house is hot during the day, but cools off in the evening and I am not having trouble sleeping (yet).  Once that happens it will be a/c all the way....I told DH that I would give him money for the electric bill just to be comfy this summer....

  • I am the same way. We don't usually use the air conditioner much, but this summer I just don't want to deal with all the heat! Plus, I need a good nights sleep.

Wow - y'all keep it cold!  Last summer, ours was set to 80.  We also have ceiling fans in every room that are always running 24/7.  (Did I mention I live in Florida?  This surprises me even).  I will say, our house is well insulated so it never feels as hot as the thermostat says it is.

This summer, it's been holding steady at 78 - and sometimes if we're doing a lot of housework, we'll turn it down to 76, but it always goes back up to 78 at night.  I should turn it up to 80 during the day while we're not home, but I always forget.

I am starting to be hotter at night, and the other night I made DH turn it down to 77.  But, I'm really holding out on keeping the thermostat up because utilities are expensive enough, and I don't want a $300 electric bill!

  • We don't have a/c (because it isn't near warm enough for it most of the year) and ours is set to 67 at night. I still wake up in the middle of the night sweating!
  • I've got ours set at 70. However, it seems that our central air unit might be breaking down. It's running all the time and not cooling the house properly. I am going to need someone to hold me when I open our next electricity bill.

  • The downstairs is at 68 during the day and 71 at night. The upstairs is at 68 all day and night.

  • Typically we dont really run ours during the day.. If we do its because we were out in the heat and its on for like 10 min just to cool us off.

But at night that loverly (yes I said loverly, yes I know its not a word...no,I dont care =])machine is running 65-68... Because I feel like I am dieing in bed. It is only bad at night, But I end up waking up all gross and sweaty and half the time I am up before I want to be because I just got to hot!

Half luckily... DH has been on the couch for like a month now due to a neck problem.. So I have his side to roll over to for that oh so amazing cool feeling. lol

We have ours programmed so that when no one is home the AC does not run. Then, an hour before we are due home it turns on and works it's way down to 70 degrees. I've considered turning it down a bit lower. On weekends, it runs constantly. I live in NC and it is very humid here, I can't imagine having it set any higher.
  • We set ours on 70, no matter if it's winter or summer it's always on 70.  I would love to sleep colder now but it's weird to turn the  heater on in DS' room during the summer time so I'm just sleeping with no blankets.

  • I am sending this entire thread to Hubs to read! I would say that we fight about the house temperature more than anything else lately! Ha!

He does not understand why I'm so hot. We have always keep the thermostat on 85 during the day and then bump it down to 80 at night. We live in TX, so it is a reprieve from the heat, but for the last week I've been feeling like our bedroom is a sauna. Last night I even had him bring the guestroom bed downstairs so we could sleep downstairs, instead (thinking it may be cooler). Wrong. I am still super hot!

  • Our is normally set at 80 with fans in every room, but now its at a naughty 77...living in FL, I already cringed at the April electric bill!

I couldn't sleep last night without the air on set at 69 (somewhere I hear a bunch of boys giggling), once it was on I was asleep right away.
  • We usually keep ours at 78 and I've been turning it down to 76 and I'm STILL hot.  I didn't even think about the fact that I'm pregnant, I just thought the A/C wasn't working very well!  Duh!  I'm glad to hear others are having the same problem.  Maybe I'll go wild and turn it down to 74.  I sit in the middle of the floor under the ceiling fan and I'm still sweating.  I'm dreading August. :(

  • We live in an older house that surprisingly stays cool. In the winter, it is FREEZING but in the summer, even in south MS, it says a cool. In the past we could keep it at 78 all the time but I've got it on 74 now and turn it down when we go to sleep at night to 72 because I get so hot. My husband is always hot so I think putting it on 68 would make him happy but I can't handle that bill!

  • Ours has been set at 75 during the day, but it wasn't kicking on at night so I lowered it to 68 for night time.  We are going to have to invest in some fans for me, otherwise our bill is going to be terrible.

  • We have a massively huge ac unit in our apt. Normally it's on 76 when we go to bed. Lately, it's been on 72. Now, I know that doesn't seem like a lot but I think because the unit is so big 72 is really like 62. DH has been hating it. Our poor dog sleeps under her blanket now too.

We keep the downstairs around 65-70 when we are home and don't turn on the upstairs at all until about 20 minutes before DD's bedtime. While it's not on upstairs, the ceiling fans are on in the bedrooms. Our electric bill hasn't been bad so far though. We never run both units at the same time, I think it's a waste!

  • DH has it set to freakin 85 during the day when no one is home.. but now that I'll be home on bedrest, we'll probably keep it at 74. I also had the same thought.. its only MAY, and its been in the high 80s.

  • I turn mine down before I go to bed and I still woke up sweating last night/this morning.

    day: 78

    night: 76

but our bedroom stays warmer than the rest of the house (it's huge and only has 2 small vents) so I have been seriously considering a window unit for in there to add to the central A/C so I don't have to keep the downstairs frigid to sleep.

  • Ours never goes above 70. I'd say at night (in Seattle) it stays around 67. And my hubby isn't even here to warm up the bed for me! I guess I like it cold!

  • Wow, ours is always set at 70 during the summer even when I'm not pregnant, and we live in Ohio where it's not terribly hot!  I guess I'm a wuss! lol
  • We don't have/need central a/c in upstate NY so no battles yet. It's been unseasonably hot the past few days, but the nights are reasonable. We've been getting by with a fan in the window so far, which feels like heaven. Luckily DH is a polar bear and usually freezes me out completely, so it will be interesting to see who wants the a/c first this yer.

  • We keep ours on 65 all the time!  I live in Louisiana (the high today is 91)!!!!  It's freakin' hot and muggy:/

  • We keep ours at 78 during the day and 72 at night.
  • It's still pretty cool out where I live (Seattle area), so we don't have our A/C on yet. We keep our bedroom window open at night and leave the heat off though, so it's usually 65ish in our bedroom.

I like to tell my H that he must be part Eskimo, he likes the house super cold. We keep the bedroom window open year round (even when it's freezing out) and we don't turn the heat on at night. It isn't normally humid and doesn't get too hot here thankfully.

We turn our air down to 68 at night.  Our last month's power bill was $66 which is the lowest it's been this year.
