Yes, I think hospitals give you the humongous pads. And no, I don't think that the thin, long pads will work. I can guarantee that you will bleed a lot in the first few days after birth.
I would check with your hospital. My hospital provides them, but I am bringing some of my own too in case I don't like the hospital ones. From what I've heard, I would get pads that you would use for a really heavy period.
the hospital i went/go to provided the huge ones. i had a c/s and was able to take some of the big ones and mesh panties they provided home and i think within a day or two of that i was in regular pads. just no tampons.
Yes, the hospital will provide them for you. But last time and this time I have 2 of my own packed in the labor bag. They are overnight, extra long with wings. Not sure if a thin one will do. I'd get the overnight ones. One package of 20 should do and then you can use the other ones.
I *think* most every hospital provides you pads now, at least private/public hospitals. If you are going to a military hospital you might need to bring your own.
Yes, overnight/ultra thin pads will work perfectly when you get home (and are a lot more comfy and absorbant!)
the hospital should provide everything you need - they have huge pads hospital grade pads that are very hard to find in the stores. so before you leave - ask for more.
i needed the huge pads for at least a week - i bled very heavily & for a long time. what i found to work almost as well as the hospital ones were poise (?) - the ones for bladder leaks - they are super thick, long & absorbent.
after that I slowly 'downgraded" to overnights, then super, then regular. If they came in longs with wings, I bought those.
a little tip - fill a few with witch hazel and freeze them - it feels so good down there, especially if you need an episiotomy or tear bad.
The hospital will provide them (many provide both the large pads and ones that have ice packs built in). I would recommend when you leave the hospital taking whatever are left in the pack home. For the first few days I wouldn't have been comfortable in thinner pads (volume was just too much), but like PP said a single pack of thicker ones should do before you can switch over, especially if you have some of the hospital ones you can bring home.

Exactly this! I didn't want to wear the hospital pads on the way home - the ones at my hospital were/are very thick and don't have wings and not at all comfortable. They were great for the first day, but after that overnight pads worked fine.....
They'll give you some but even if you take the pack home with you, they aren't going to last as long as you bleed most likely. I actually think that thin ones that are for heavy periods should be fine. I use Always Infinity and they're amazingly absorbant but thin. If underwear is really uncomfortable (since you'll run out of the meshies as well) or your flow is just that heavy, its not an awful idea to consider some depends for a bit. embarrassing sure, but you probably won't be going out if you're considering them. Plus they aren't tight banded and your ability to pee could be a little off after delivery anyway. So there are a lot of options, I'd buy a pack of pads, leave them at home and then send DH out if you feel you may have different needs after delivery. ps buy tucks!

Military hospitals provide everything you need as well (including pads, mesh panties, diapers, etc). The only thing they might not provide (and it varies from hospital to hospital just like with other hospitals) is pacifiers.
I was at a military hospital with my 1st and they provide pads. I worse those teh 1st day or so while I was there becase they wil actually change it and check your bleeding and all of that jazz. After that I wore the posie bladder control pads and needed those for about a week. I would have some thicker pads on hand but I think one small pack will be fine and then some regular overnights should do the trick.
Pretty much the same as the other responses, but here's my 2 cents:
The hospital provided some for me that were honestly the size of a small pillow. At first, they look a little much, but paired with the lovely mesh panty, they are a God-send! I'm so glad I took some home!
I know everyone's experience is different, but I for one was in just a regular ultra thick extra long maxi pad (also provided by the hospital) during the day by 2 days PP. However, that night I started losing clots and with each one there was a very large gush of blood. It pretty much gushed out everytime I tried to stand or change positions. Again, I was so glad I had the gigantic ones. But by the next day, I was back to the maxis.
The ones I bought were Kotex overnight maxi. They are super long and pretty thick, but very comfortable and they are doing good with leaks even laying down at night.
Wow, sorry that got so long! No one warned me about the whole clot/gush thing so I thought I would just share that since we were on the pad subject!
Re: if you've already given birth or feel very knowledgeable on the subject....

Hospitals do give you the extra absorbant pads. My hospital only gave me 6, though, and 6 smaller ones.
Get Always Infinity Overnights (black and purple pkg) They are amazing!
Use the peri bottle (to squirt on your lady bits after/during peeing. It's heaven.
Yes, they provide them but I'm still bringing my fav pads that worked very well with my DD. I get the Always super long, overnight, with wings.
