Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Purpleish Blue Legs????

Yesterday at MILs my DH had just changed my 2 week olds diaper. He handed him off to my MIL, and maybe 2 minutes later she announced that his legs were turning Purpleish Blue!

We quickly removed diaper and the color immediately returned. My husband felt awful and thought maybe he put the diaper on too tight...(my DH is a master at diaper changing and based on his description I would have had the tabs in the same place he did!). My son is wearing the correct size and in fact we are 2/3 of the way through a case of Pampers swaddlers!

So we put another diaper on him very loosely ( I even cut the liner a little)
and it happened again just slower.

To see for sure if it was the diaper I wrapped him in a cloth diaper inside his
onesie and like 30 minutes later he peed all over my DH but the purpleish blue legs never again returned. We have gotten Huggies one size up and those seem to be working fine, but has anyone else experienced this with pampers or otherwise????

We go to the Pedi on Wednesday and it has not seemed to be an issue since.

Re: Purpleish Blue Legs????

  • I know my pedi says it is absolutely normal for their hands and feet to turn purple-blue.  Babies are trying to establish blood flow to everywhere.  The main concern of their body is the heart and brain so sometime the feet/hands may change colors. If your LO is cold that may cause it too.  I would just talk to your pedi about it.  I know my DD did it for the 1st couple of months and then stopped.  DS feet and hands get purple blue tint occasionally too.

  • nope and I use Pampers Swaddlers and I have used Huggies.
  • I have no input, as I haven't experienced this. We have used both pampers and huggies. I say def. talk to your pedi about it.

This. My DD's limbs often turned blue when I was nursing her when she was only a week or two old. I asked the pedi about it and she said that a baby's circulation is still quite immature at that age and that the limbs are the lower priority when it comes to adequate blood flow.
