Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Convince me to make my own baby food

DD isn't ready for solids yet, but everyone in my family and friends bought their baby food. Why make your own? Is it cheaper? Is it healthier? Give me your best sales pitch :)

It's healthier, cheaper, easy, and fun.  It takes me about 2 hours to make enough food for him for the month which means if you are working or staying home it's doable.

Where do you get your recipes from?  Do you use recipes?  A book?  I've been thinking about this, too.  TIA!

  • I plan to do it primarily because it's cheaper and I feel like I'll enjoy knowing that I made his food.  Besides, I wouldn't want to eat all of my food from a jar.
  • I'm planning on making my own solely because I only want DD to eat organic and organic baby food can get pretty pricey. I want to know exactly what is in the food I'm feeding her.
  • DD will start solids in about 3 weeks and we plan on making our own.  Look at this website.  It has some great recipes and some good advice. https://wholesomebabyfood.com/

  • We will be making all of ours. It's cheaper but most importantly I want to know EXACTLY what R is eating. I believe in wholesome, organic, fresh food and just could never feed her only jarred food that is who knows how old.
  • Here is a good book with info on making your own food:

The Everything Cooking For Baby And Toddler Book: 300 Delicious, Easy Recipes to Get Your Child Off to a Healthy Start.

Its on Amazon.com for $2.85 new.

I have 3 under 3, I'm a resident working crazy hours, my DH is also a surgical resident and gone way more than I am,,, and I absolutely love making my own baby food.

I've been using wholesomebabyfood.com as well. Tonight I made apples, pears, mangos, green beans, and broccoli and it took 90 minutes from start to finish. All I have to do tomorrow is pop them out of the ice cube trays and into Ziplic bags. It's incredibly easy and quick. $4 in apples made what would have cost almost $18 if I bought baby food.

I use my blender, regular ice cube trays, ziploc bags to store the food in, and plastic wrap - all stuff I already had in the hosue, so I didn't have to go out and spend money just to save money by making my own food.

  • I have made all my baby food for both DS who is 14, and also DD who is 30 months.  It is simple.  As a PP said if you have about 2 hours a month you can make and freeze a ton of food.

I love the book Super Baby Food.  Also Wholesome Baby food website is one of my favorites.

We eat mostly organic and all of my children eat completely organic until the age of 1.  It is much cheaper to buy the ingredients and make organic baby food.

  • Excellent question - we were just discussing this over the weekend as well. I'm curious to see what everyone says.
  • I make DD's food because it's cheaper, fun, easy, and much tastier! The food I make tastes just like the food I would eat. I tasted some jar food the other day and it was AWFUL. It was green beans and it tasted nothing like green beans! The green beans I make taste normal. :)

  • This is so interesting.  I look forward to reading more on the website.  I never thought of making my own food, but now I am considering it.
