Postpartum Depression

f/u to depression during pg -- talked to my OB -- need more advice.

I popped in from PgAL over the weekend to ask about depression during pregnancy vs. PPD.

Well I went to my appointment this morning and my OB suggested that I go back on Prozac at 20mg per day. I have done some research and there is very little information on the effects of antidepressants taken during pregnancy and  I can't even begin to explain how scared I am. She reassured me she would closely monitor me and the baby and that Prozac (and Zoloft) were the safest there are right now.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or knew of any other resources I could use to find more information about it.

Thanks!

  • It's always presented as a balance - is it riskier to have untreated depression/anxiety or to take antidepressants?  For many women who are pregnant/nursing, it is riskier to have untreated depression.  For me, my inability to interact and play with DD was worse than taking Zoloft while nursing.  I didn't have to make that choice while pregnant, but you could talk to a psychiatrist as well.

  • I am actually on 200 mg of Zoloft a day. I have been taking it since I was about 19 weeks pregnant. I started at 50 mg and built up to that dose. It is dangerous to have untreated depression while pregnant.

A psychiatrist wrote a book called Pregnant on Prozac about her own experience.

And someone else posted this site a while back and I called and they were very helpful. https://www.otispregnancy.org/

    Good Luck!

So love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who don't. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living."
