s/o Dentists...a PSA

Especially pasty white girls at increased risk of skin cancer

Go to your dermatologist to get a thorough skin check.  If you are higher risk, you may be screened several times throughout pregnancy

I have huge moles all over the trunk of my body, plus familial history and where I lived previously, I'm at an significantly elevated risk for melanoma.  Derm wants me screened every 3 months during pg.  OB agrees wholeheartedly and is more than willing to let the derm take whatever the hell he wants for biopsy/removal.

My OB is laid back about a lot of things.  My massive moles are not one of those things.  He said that if a melanoma were metastatic, those metastases can cross the placenta.  It's one of the more common ones to cross the placenta, if it can manage that.  Plus dysplastic moles have been shown to overexpress an estrogen receptor and can become more invasive upon pregnancy.

Get your skin checked and play whack-a-mole :).  I'm calling for my appt tomorrow.

  • Yikes! I didn't even think of that. I've been planning on going to the dermatologist for a while now but I keep forgetting to make an appointment. My grandfather has had melanoma so I guess I have an increased risk. I guess I'll talk to my RE about it on Friday at my appointment.

  • Oh interesting! I go once a year because I am a pasty-white mole covered girl myself. I have an appointment in July. Do you go every 3 months because of your history or because you're pregnant?

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

Every 3 months while pregnant only.  And this may just be for my ugly-ass huge moles and history.  I see a derm that does a lot of clinical research on them.

Otherwise I'm on the yearly evaluation timeline as of now.
