to eat or not to eat...

So my lovely DH decided to start dinner this evening before I got home.  I had originally planned on grilled chicken but soon felt nauseated at that thought!  So... DH made the following... Beef Hillshire Farm sausage, green beans and carrots (which he insisted was good for baby) and mac and cheese.

The questions/funny part!  I wasn't sure about beef sausage... is this ok?  I know hot dogs are out but what about sausage?  Also the mac and cheese... ya know the kraft kind... yea he made it using extra milk because we were out of butter HAHAHA!  Still turned out ok just want to make sure that doesn't drastically change mac n chesse to an unsafe eating point lol!  Thanks ladies!

  • Sausage is fine on occasion.  Kinda salty, if you have hypertension issues, best to not consume too much.

Hot dogs are OK too on occasion.  Just don't make a daily habit out of them, cook them throroughly.  Mind you, I don't know a single person that would opt for eating a raw hot dog *bleh*

Kraft mac n cheese?  Really?  It's fine.

  • I would always advise avoiding processed meat, not just because of listeria, which now wouldn't be an issue since it's cooked.

Read this article, (I linked it in another thread today) it talks about nitrates and how bad they are for you and baby.

Oh yikes. I was really looking forward to a hot dog for memorial day. I will have to think about that one now!

  • i would suggest eating whatever you want and everything in moderation you'll be fine. don't over-worry.
  • You can find hot dogs and sausages that are nitrate free if you are concerned about it.

Pancreatic cancer incidence (if it's a plausible observation) and giving cancer to a lab animal =/= pregnancy risk and the leap to assume that nitrates are causing the effect is a big one.  And an even larger one that volatile nitrate metabolites actually make it to your plasma in any significant quantity to harm your baby (not including inhaling 5 hotdogs a day for weeks) is not even well founded.

If cancer risk always = pregnancy risk, then you'd really have to take a hard look at your folic acid, because there has already been a study published indicating that could actually fuel certain cancers' growth, lung being the example. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19920236.  This is pretty solid biochemistry for anyone dealing with antifolate chemotherapies.  Obviously taking more folic acid for the baby short term outweighs any risk that will come from getting a old person's cancer like lung cancer. Or pancreatic cancer.

Just have the hotdog in moderation.  Or have one for a treat and a hamburger, or some salad.
