Had 1st ultrasound!!

First let me start of my saying I wanted to kill my ultrasound tech and my bladder doesn't hold water well....they tried to do a regular ultrasound first even though I'm only 6 weeks and 6 days...She kept mute through the entire thing, then said she was gonna do a transvaginal one.

So I'm laying there and DH is looking over her shoulder b/c I can't see the screen and she's just typing and moving the probe and typing and saying nothing....at this point I was scared to death.  Then after about 5 minutes I heard it, I heard the heartbeat!!!!!!!  The only words out of her mouth were "and there is the baby's heartbeat".

The babies is measuring 6 weeks 4 days and the heartbeat was 125bpm.  I starting crying b/c if was such a relief, especially after laying there with her saying nothing!!  She said everything look good and I guess the Dr's office will call if they need to see me for anything

So a word to all ultrasound techs...TALK to the pregnant lady laying on your table!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Had 1st ultrasound!!

  • Congrats!  I went for one when they thought I was 7w but I was only 5w so no heartbeat.  The same thing happened for me with the tech - silent until she says "no heartbeat" (scared me of course) and then "you must not be as far along as you thought".  My thoughts: B#*$! the only reason I think I'm 7w is bc you guys told me that - I didn't make it up on my own and even right before the U/S I told you I don't know when I ovulated (hormones :-).  Then she did a transvag and asked me if I'd ever had ovarian cysts, to which I replied no, and she said well you do now.  I was so worried until I talked to the doc who said everything looked normal for 5w and that I ovulated late (which I figured since I'm not regular) and that the cysts are very normal that early in the pg and will produce progesterone until the placenta takes over and they go away.

Not a fan of the U/S tech!  Congrats again!

  • Yay for hearing the heartbeat!!!  Hope your next u/s doesn't start as stressful!
  • Congrats!!  So annoying about the ultrasound tech, though.  My tech tells me EVERYTHING as she's doing it which is great.  And the screen is always pointed towards the patient so I've always been able to follow along.  It's such a bummer that she had you so scared!

  • My u/s tech was pretty quiet and just kept clicking clicking clicking. DH looked lost because the screen was facing him so he could actually see stuff, but he had no clue what he was looking at. Finally after what felt like forever, she says "OK, now I'm gonna show you what I see." Wait...what were you just doing?! lol Come to find out she was doing all the shots the doctor needed first and then we she went through everything with us so we could take our time and look around.

    Regardless, congrats on your heartbeat!

  • ugh I haven't had my u/s, but i HATE when docs, nurses, etc don't talk!  It makes me anxious!  CONGRATS on the hb that is wonderful!!

  • I agree.  I'm a nurse and my U/S tech didn't talk to me either.  I said to DH when we got in the car that she didn't even introduce herself.
  • Congrats on a great u/s!

  • That's great news, but boo to your u/s tech! I had a crappy one when I was having pelvic pain a few months ago. I had a t/v u/s. She kept quiet and knew I had a second u/s scheduled and said "I can't tell you what I see your dr. will have to tell you, but I wouldn't bother with the other u/s." I was hysterical and convinced I was going to have fertility issues, when all it was was some simple cysts.
