Thought/Question on Maternity Clothes

Probably a question I should know the answer to....

Do you think we'll have to have 3 seasons worth of maternity clothes (Summer, Fall, and Winter) or do you think in general we may not be showing enough to wear maternity clothes until the Fall?

For me I'll be 20w by the end of August, would a person normally be showing at that point?

Re: Thought/Question on Maternity Clothes

  • With my 1st pregnancy I started to wear some maternity shirts around 16 weeks. Depending on what type of summer maternity clothes you buy you may be able to wear them in the fall and winter also.

  • Here's what I'm thinking: tank tops! The really long ones. They can come from day to day to fancy. From tight to loose. And then covering up with cute sweaters. But obviously I havnt had a lot of time to think about this and off of the top of my head sounds like a fantastic idea :)

  • I think a lot of it has to do with your body type. I'm 6'0 tall and was told by my Dr. that I wouldn't start to show at all until about 16 weeks because I have more room in my abdomen for the baby to grow. I think it also has to do with where and how you gain weight. If you gain it in your arse like I do you'll probably want new pants but might not need new shirts. If you were previously heavy you are more likely to gain weight earlier on which will also contribute to whether or not you need maternity clothes. Also, do large babies run in your family? I might be tall and have more room for a baby to grow, but both mine and DH families have double digit babies. No exceptions. I might not gain early, but once I pop I'll POP!
  • I ditto Nikki.  I'm going to buy some summer clothes bc it's still kinda hot here in September and October and I will definitely getting fall and winter clothes.

I like this idea A LOT, so much better than dealing with the tent-like tops too!

Cool that your doc gave you an estimate on when you would show! Good to know the different factors!

  • Since our fall and winter weather is pretty mild, I plan to stick to the baby doll/empire waist dresses I've been living in until it gets too cold or I get too big. So far they've been great, so much more comfy than slightly too-tight pants. When it gets cold (as in the low 50s) I'll buy some maternity pants and long t-shirts/sweaters as needed.

This is my plan! Target tanks are really long.

  • I plan on just hair tie holding or bella banding my shorts since it can be quite hot in MD into October , lst time I got a little uncomfortable in my jeans by week 12ish not pregnant big, just ugh these pants feel awful kinda big. so I'm holding off on the official preggo clothes til winter weather.. MD is one of those fun places where it's 112 in july and 31 in december so definitely need multiple seasons. but I already have alot of winter things that can double.
  • I've wondered the same thing. I'm really short-under 5'2"- and have a short torso so I have ahunch I'll be busting out of my clothes earlier than some. I'm going to go as long as I can without buying much, and then layer for the fall/winter.
