Your opinion on cold lunch meat, please :-)

Ok, so I know we are supposed to avoid processed meats and cheeses bc of the risk of bacteria, unless we heat it up.  I have let go of my love for cold turkey sandwiches [sigh] but some of my mom-to-be friends say they still eat lunch meat.  I don't mind ditching it for a while, but I keep having work lunch functions and they are bringing boxed lunches with cold cut sandwiches as the only options.  I haven't told work yet, so I definitely don't want to make a big deal of it, plus I secretly really want to eat that turkey sandwich!  Anyone else saying screw it to the lunch meat rule?

Re: Your opinion on cold lunch meat, please :-)

  • Lots of people say screw it. I don't know how I feel about it. I am such a worrier, that I don't need to add to my worry by risking it. So for me, it actually decreases my stress to avoid it all together. But lots of people feel quite comfortable eating an occasional deli sandwhich.

  • It's not a big deal to eat cold lunch meat! If your that concerned ask your Dr.

  • personally I'd rather nto risk it, rare is not a word that is good enough for me. offices usually have a microwae, can you sneak out and heat it up? Can always make and excuse of "last week I had a sandwich from a deli and i think i got food poisoning so I'm gonna heat up my sandwiches from now on" if a coworker inquires.?
  • I just avoid it.  If it was turkey sandwich or starve, I'd eat the sandwich.
  • My OB said there is no reason to avoid it if it comes from a reputable place or you buy it at the store and bring it home.  I've found she's a little more relaxed than most, though . . .

To answer your question, I eat it when I want.

  • Its your own personal decision really.  I know people say to avoid sushi, but I trust the place I get sushi, so I still eat an occasional raw roll.  I also don't think the tuna they put in the rolls has enough Mercury to make a difference for the occasional splurge.  So its something that you have to weigh when it comes to food poisoning risks and things that aren't an inherent risk.  I'd eat the sandwiches ;)
  • To me, it's not worth the risk. Even if it's a miniscule risk, I cannot imagine a time when I would need a cold cut sandwich so badly that I would even risk a .0000001% chance of hurting my baby.

Deli meat is really bad for you anyway, (unless you specifically seek out the nitrate free kind) and contributes to stomach and pancreatic cancer.

It's not like we're asked to cut out something that we need to eat everyday that is good for you. I understand that it's probably fine but, why risk it?

I agree. My Dr. said sushi was fine in moderation. The few fish she said to avoid arent commonly used in most rolls anyways.

  • I am one who follows every rule of pregnancy bc I'm a nervous ninny so I wouldn't eat the meat.
  • I just make a panini or a deli sandwich in a sandwich maker! Melted cheese & turkey! YUM!

  • OH, I forgot, have you tried heating it up?  If you heat it up, you can still put it back in the fridge because you've killed the bacteria, so you can still have a cold sandwich.  I would definitely heat up sandwiches where you don't know where they got them.

I don't eat it cold.  It's not worth the risk to me.  It only takes one bad piece of lunchmeat to have something go wrong.  Yes, the probability is farily unlikely, but it must have happened somewhere for the doctors to tell you not to eat it.

  • I don't eat it. I'd rather a healthy baby (doing everything I could), rather than a non healthy baby (and wondering if it was the cold meat I ate).

I agree with this.  I know there are lots of women who don't buy into the long list of "don'ts" that go along with pregnancy, but I am a "better safe than sorry" type of girl.

  • Thanks for all the feedback!  I totally trust the place - been going there for years, but I heated it up just to make myself feel better.  Only one person questioned me on it and I said I was melting the cheese and just enjoyed a warm sandwich :-)  I don't always have the option to heat it up, and don't know what they're bringing in for lunch until meeting time, but when I can avoid it or heat it up, why not?  Thanks again!
  • I asked my DR about this and he said there is a tiny chance it can cause listeria or something, I forget the word. He also said they do not talk to patients about this as they have never had a problem in 35 years so they dont worry about it. I dont worry about it and did not with first pregnancy, daughter is fine and so was I. I think it is a bunch of stuff that gets stirred up from somewhere. Where did you hear you are not supposed to eat lunch meat, a DR or 1st tri board? Think about where you heard it and decide from there

  • My gag reflex went into overdrive at the thought of nuking deli cheese.  Gross.

I'm eating 2 slices of boar's head cheddar with pretzels right now.  So, yeah. lol.

  • My OB said to get the packaged kind because it isnt in and our of refridgeration all day.  I was surprised because I didn't know why you weren't supposed to eat it and I figured the deli meat was more fresh but it is actually the wrong choice.

I haven't been packing my usual lunch of ham and cheese everyday but I have had Jimmy John's twice.

  • I said screw it. I've had Jimmy Johns 2x since my BFP and made at home deli turkey sandwich once.
