Possible Ban on Drop side Cribs...WDYT?

I read this morning that Congress is pushing to completely ban drop side cribs.  I have never cared for the style, or thought that the drop side would really be convenient, anyways.  If banning the cribs saves lives, I am all for it!  I was just curious what others' thoughts on this was?

  • I'm for it. They seem dangerous to me.

  • I never even considered one because I think they look dangerous and complicated.  Why is it so hard to lean over the crib anyway?  I think they should ban them... if ONE child dies, that's ONE too many!
  • While I have no need or desire for a drop-side, they can be hery high for shorter people. There needs to be an alternative,  andnot of having them step up on something or similar, which would be a falling hazard to a sleep-deprived mommy.

We have a Jenny Lind-style drop side. Our crib was not recalled, but DH secured the dropside.

I love my crib. I think it is beautiful, but if it is dangerous then it is dangerous.

  • I didn't want a drop side crib because I don't like them.  Now they are all being recalled.  I'm so glad we didn't end up with one!

  • They have worked for several decades.  I agree with recalls for specific defects, but I don't think they should be outright banned.  Maybe they should just set new standards for building them... with something like a lock... i dunno.

  • SO many people told me I would regret not having a drop side crib, but we have the sturdiest crib on the planet. it's not rickety and I don't mind not having the drop side. She's not THAT far down that I can't reach her. Then again, I'm taller than most of you so maybe that's why it doesn't bother me. :)
  • My non-drop side crib was recalled, we thought it was sturdy and safe. Unfortunately sometimes things aren't safe.  I don't think a ban would be effective, besides short, what about handicapped parents ? I think stricter requirements and fines for those who make unsafe equipment.

  • I feel that dropsides can be risky.?

But I am of the opinion that everything is risky and can have problems. (Not saying it is okay, but it is life). I feel that banning dropsides would not eliminate cribs from being dangerous.

I am a little on the fence. I see both sides. ?

I agree that their should be new requirements that make drop side cribs safer.  I have a friend that is 5' tall and she really does need a drop side crib or she wouldn't be able to get her baby out of the crib.

  • Theyre already banned where I live.  Suffolk County on Long Island banned them a few months ago. Im all for it

I'm absolutely on board!  There are so many recalls of drop sides.  If we can save childrens' lives, we should do everything we can.

  • I love my drop side.  I honestly don't use it much, but I have a bad back so when that acts up I have to or I can't lift DD out of the crib.  The company that made has not had a recall since 2001 (for cribs) and that was for a mattress bracket nothing to do with the drop side.

I honestly don't know how I could lift my DD who doesn't stand yet without the drop side.

  • I think something should be done as well. As for banned, I honestly don't know. Even if they are banned it doesn't mean that will be instant fix as people still will have them, sell them via friends and so on. I am short and although it isn't convenient now that DS is on the lower setting of the crib, I personally would rather be at an inconvience than him be in harms way. As for handicapped parents I know that the TLC show with the tiny parents have an almost door like opening on their crib. I would think maybe that would be an alternative option for those parents. ( I have only seen the show once so I don't know for sure what the crib entails, but it looked awesome and seemed to work for them)
  • We have one. At one point , I went and looked at all crib recalls over the past few years. They were pretty evenly divided between drop and non drop sided, there was like one or two more drop sided than non - and that was out of a lot of recalls, not like two more out of three total. What I took away was that CRIBS are appallingly dangerous in general. But, what are you going to do. I wanted a drop side because kids I babysat for always had them and I like the lower side option. I'm short; I had trouble getting over a lot of the other cribs. I think there should be strict requirements for the quality, but I don't think an out and out ban is necessary.

    This.

Without my dropside (and I don't think using a stool is safe) I wouldn't be able to get DS into or out of his crib.

  • I'm for it. Our daughter is sleeping with us until we buy her a new crib.
