Working Moms

Would love your advice/thoughts!

Have a potential job opportunity... is it worth it to get more $$ but a longer commute? I already feel like I don't see DD much as it is, and this would be adding an additional 20 minutes each way (this new commute would be 35 miles / 1 hr one way). It's a significant pay jump that would put us in a much better position financially, where as now we're just getting by. This would mean vacations, more toys/clothes/etc for DD and some aspect of comfort after paying for our hefty mortgage! Oh, plus it's great for my career.

I'm 99% sure I'll accept if offered it; just sad that it takes me away from DD for even more of the day. Does anyone have a similar commute? How is it working for you? Any regrets?

  • wow, 1 hour each way is a killer IMO.  Could you work out some sort of deal to maybe WAH 1-2 days a week?  It sounds like a hard one to say no too, but I think that would wear me down over time.

  • I would accept it. I have the same commute. I don't have regrets. I'm lucky to have a flexible boss that always me to use my pto time whenever I need whether it's for a baseball game, school activity, vacation, etc. I also have the option to work from home if I absolutely need to if I have to stay home with a sick little one. And more stability for us financially means we get to do and go more places together, less arguments about money, less stress. Some days I wish I got off earlier but 20 minutes wouldn't make a difference to me honestly. If I had 20 minutes more in the morning I would just sleep in anyways. And really, I've grown to like my quiet time in my car to be alone with my thoughts, music, etc. It's all what you make of it.
  • I've had long commutes (1 hour or more) and I've had short (right now, it's about 10 mins).  My long commutes were well before I had DS.  I hate, hate HATE long commutes.  some people can roll w/ them and enjoy them - but I was never one of them.

The idea of having to leave earlier in the morning or get home later- I would have a very very hard time w/ it.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't. I also took over a 65% paycut to accept a part time job when my son was a few weeks old, though. Here's the way I look at it. Kids are only babies once. I figure when my kids are in school for most of the day and older, that's the time in my life where I can focus on getting a career that makes more so we can travel/buy nice things. For now, I'd rather sacrifice money to be home more.

    That's a pretty long commute.

I know this is dramatic, but is moving a possibility? Where does your husband work relative to the potential job?

  • For me it would depend on how much more $$ and how much better....if it was a job I would love going to every day and was enough extra cash to pay for my extra gas, new car and super family vacations/weekend fun...tehn I would do it...goo dluck with your decision!

  • I would definitely do it.  I do not have a long commute but if an opportunity came up like yours, it sounds like the advantages of your new position will greatly outweigh the one disadvantage you mentioned.  ETA: Sorry two: Long commute and a little less time with DD.  It really sounds like you are excited about it though.

  • I only have about a 30 minute commute right now, and I despise it as it is.  If it was a temporary situation where the long term plan in the next couple of years would be to relocate or have a teleworking option, I could see doing it, but I personally wouldn't commit to that long a commute on an indefinite basis, it's just something I hate enough that I know it alone would make me start disliking my job enough to make the $$ not worth it.  I know plenty of people who it doesn't bother, though, so it's just a call you have to make.
