Arghhh! Farking neighbors! WWYD?

For the past few days (except the weekend) the neighbors have had construction being done on their walkway started at 7 in the morning! Starting that early there are saws going constantly and its like nails on a chalkboard. Sleep is hard enough to come by lately without this crap. I end up waking up with a headache and not being able to get back to sleep.

I called the town and they directed me to the non-emergency police #. I asked what the policy/law is regarding noise and hours and was told that it is "whenever its disturbing".

We moved into our house in mid-January and I have only met this next-door neighbor once. I'm afraid to go over and complain to them because I don't want them to hate me but this is getting ridiculous!

WWYD? :(

Generally they won't do anything about construction noise during daylight hours unless the City has a specific ordinance regarding those hours.  The only thing you can hope for is that they don't have a construction permit.  All that will do is prolong the process and your agony.

7am seems like a normal start time for construction to me.  Especially since it is summer and getting hot by mid-day.

I think you just need to suck it up and deal.

  • They said "whenever it's disturbing"? I've never heard that before. I know around here it's from 10pm - 6am. If they're having construction done then there's really nothing you or they could do. I understand 7 is early for some but people have to work to make money. Sorry I'm no help!

  • For a temporary construction project, I would just go buy myself some earplugs and let it go.  Their sidewalk will be done soon and if they haven't been bad neighbors beyond that I wouldn't rock the boat.
  • I would try going over and talking to them politely to start with. I think they will be understanding since you're pregnant. We have the noisiest, most annoying neighbors in the world and they have a dog that when they let it out it just barks and barks at nothing and they leave it out. They used to let it out so early in the morning and leave it out and we could hear it through our windows, plus it's right outside our bedroom. One morning DH got so frustrated and went over there and was nice about it and since then they have been getting a little better about not letting it out early and leaving it out. They said they were moving soon, that was months ago...not soon enough. They are still super annoying, but not as bad. If talking to them doesn't work then it's time to take the next step, GL!

  • I know that the city I live in has a noise ordinance and it goes from 10pm-7am.  I too think 7am sucks, but that's a normal start time, esp. during the summer when it's already scorching by noon.

This. I sleep with ear plugs almost every night (won't once the baby comes) b/c the noise bothers me. 7 am is a normal start time for construction.

  • Sucky indeed, but I would invest in some earplugs and a white noise machine if necessary.  It is a short term problem and not worth causing problems with the neighbors.  Unfortunatley, 7am is pretty normal.

At least it is on a weekday though.  7am on the weekend, I'd probably be singing a different tune!

Yeah, this. And keep in mind, there is likely to be some noise that your neighbors are going to find irritating coming from your house very soon, and you may not be able to keep it contained to daylight hours...

This. 7 am is a totally normal time to start construction. You could always ask the neighbors what the timeline is if you are honestly concerned about how much longer it will take.

7am is normal in most places. Either way I would have spoken to the neighbors about it before calling City Hall or the police.

  • Ear plugs and big girl panties are your friends.
Batman likes to watch cartoons on the weekends. Whatever.

I didn't complain to the PD about them, just checked what the noise ordinance is since we're fairly new in town and it wasn't listed on their website. I would talk to the neighbors before involving authorities no matter what the issue. I just wanted to know before I spoke with them.

Okay, good! I misunderstood. Hope it dies down for you.

  • Agree with previous posters.  If you call the police and they happen to respond to your call, they would tell the neighbors that there have been complaints coming - and they might even say that it's from the people next door.  It's better to just suck it up and know that it wont last too long.  Hard advice when you're exhausted, I know.  My neighbors are doing construction and they don't like to stop until after 10pm.  Ugh.
  • I wish I could sleep past 7am.  At this point I'd probably be on my porch with a cup of tea and my oatmeal watching the construction guys pull up at 6:30am.  That said, do you have a HOA? Our rules for our HOA don't allow construction before 8am.

This. The project is temporary, your screaming infant and soon to be loud child playing outside will be an irritant to them as well. I wouldn't risk putting your foot in your mouth and looking like a selfish asss by saying something to them for when that time rolls around.

But I do feel your pain, I haven't been sleeping due to our townhouse's roof's being reshingled, so it's not just our roof it's 6 houses worth of pounding nails at 7 am. I've been using ear plugs and cursing the workers in my car under my breath as I drive away to work...it helps :)

Sorry, but I agree with this. It's temporary. I haven't slept past 7 in 2.5 years. ;) just go to bed a little earlier until it's over.
