More child dining spin-offs...The positive?

What do you do that keeps the kid/s happy when out to eat?

I am now bringing along a set of silverware for DS because some places the forks are just too big to handle and he gets his own knife to learn to cut.

He'll get a cup of juice on rare occasion.  Otherwise the server will fill his cup with ice water and he likes that.  He shakes it to hear the ice in there.

I ask the server to give an extra set of crayons so he has an assortment of colors.

And if he's particularly hungry I do order his food or something like croutons or a roll and butter with our drinks or as soon as we sit down.  I haven't had issue with this usually.  Most servers are pretty good about remembering that he's hungry.  And the one pizza shop we go to once a month actually knows us by name.  Our server there brings him his own little cup of pickle slices to snack on until his slice comes out.

  • DS is really good in restaurants luckily.

It is definitely a special occasion, so he'll get a cup of juice/water mix or choco/reg milk mix.  I often ask for a fruit plate or similar right off the hop and I make sure that if we order appies, he gets his meal with our appies.  I also take a colouring book and crayons if I'm not sure if the restaurant will have them.

That has worked for the most part.

We rarely eat out.  C just can't behave himself.  At home, he does pretty good with sitting at the table, etc. but when we're out he wants to stand in the chair, etc.  So we just don't put him (and us) in the situation that we know will frustrate everybody.  We do try every couple of months or so but try to stick to places that are kid friendly.

  • lol the only thing I can do now that's foolproof is BF at the table =D

Being that Max is so little still, if we must take him with us to dinner, I make sure he's fed & changed before we leave, I bring at least 3oz of thawed BM with me, a sucky, a teether, and at least 4 diapers. If all of that plus breastfeeding doesn't equate to a happy or a sleeping baby, one of us takes him outside while the other gets the check etc.  He's been going to restaurants since he as 4 days old and we haven't really had any disasters.

  • we have a bag of toys that we bring with us everywhere.  it has a magna-doodle, a box of crayons, a coloring book and a couple of other little things.  she's 4 now, so really what she wants to do is color and talk to you, both of which are easy.

  • Always bring a snack.  And go out from an early age.  DS has always been pretty good.  He is starting to want to walk around a bit more, unfortunately, which I hope we can pot the kabash on.

  • DD loves to people watch.  We always feed her snacks (Cheerios, etc) until the food comes and then give her some of what we ordered.  We get compliments on how well-behaved she is.  We do take her out pretty often - usually once a week.

  • We can get some funny looks, but we bring our own booster seat. She is small, so a lot of the high chairs are too big and uncomfortable for her. We also take in our own puffs or granola bar or something she likes to eat. We also have to take in Douglas, her stuffed horse. lol She's eaten out with us from day 1, so she is really very good about it, and most people just want to ooh and ahh over her rather than get mad.
  • N eats out regularly.  We make sure to take a small cup of snack foods in case the restaurant is slow.  he likes to have his own menu to look at, and we try to keep bendy straws in the diaper bag since not all places have them.  but usually we eat at really kid friendly places, and he's always been well behaved.  ::knocks on wood::
