You can make homemade pedialyte to drink that's better. Just google "pedialyte recipe" and you'll find one. It's like 2 tsp salt, 1/4 cup sugar, and 3 cups of boiled water. You don't have all the dyes in the drink, like the electroyte drinks you can buy, and it's cheaper.
Check the sodium content if you're concerned about high blood pressure. A great natural alternative is coconut water--give you great electrolytes to combat dehydration, tastes good (especially the kind with pineapple or mango juice added), and it has LOADS of potassium to boot.

I have never heard of them NOT being safe. I would, though, water them down because of what pp said- tons of sugar.
