Starting Solids Question

What guidelines did your pedi give you re: starting solids? I have info from my pedi and his guidelines include starting cereal/rice, fruits, and veggies at the same time and giving the baby one of each every day.

Re: Starting Solids Question

  • I didn't try something new every day, I waited three days in-between each new thing.  This way, you can better determine if there is an allergy or not to a particular food, as they do not always show up immediately.

S did not like the cereals plain, and when I tried it myself, I imagine it was what wallpaper paste would taste like.  Since he had been on prune juice since he was 9 weeks old due to bowel issues, after a week I gave in and mixed in some prunes.  Worked well, and he finally took it.

I then took the advice of a friend and started with veggies before fruit, as they tend to like the sweetness more than the veggies.  His favorite was the spring veggie mix from Earth's Best.  I never gave him meat/poultry from the jar.  He didn't have any until he could eat the regular stuff.  There was just something about the jarred meats/poultry that just didn't work for me.

Good luck and try not to worry if your little one doesn't take to it very well!

  • My pediatrician recommended holding off solids until 6 months.  We introduced right before 6 months.  We started with rice cereal.  We later tried oatmeal and I probably will go straight to oatmeal for #2 just because the rice is so bland.  You have to give some time in between trying new foods to see if there are any reactions to the food and you know what is causing the reaction.  We have a family history of allergies so we were really cautious - introducing only one food a week. (I think most people introduce a new food every 3 days).

My pedi didn't really care if I did fruits or veggies next and it didn't matter if I did all fruits, all veggies, or alternated.

I made all of my food and used the guidelines on wholesomebabyfood.com to help me in decided what foods to make and introduce next.  Even if you don't plan on making your own food, it has a lot of good information.

  • We started solids at 6 months, following my pedi's recommendation. This is what we did: cereal 1x a day for about 2 weeks (breakfast), then we introduced one veggie at at time 1 x a day for lunch(we did 4 days in a row of the same veggie before moving on to the next veggie). Once he had tried all the first stage veggies, we added fruit to his lunch, waiting the same 4 days before trying a new one. At the beginning he would eat about one ounce of veggie and one ounce of fruit. Then we started to give him veggie and fruit for dinner also. Right now he is eating cereal in the morning with about 1 ounce of fruit, for lunch he has anywhere from 2-4 ounces of veggie, 2 ounces of fruit and for dinner he will have 2 ounces of veggie, 1 ounce of fruit. He still has the same amount of ounces of milk when he has a bottle but can wait much longer in between those feedings.
