poll: laundry detergent

Do you use a special detergent for washing baby stuff? I'm talking clothes etc, not cloth diapers (since you have to use a special kind for those anyway, right?).

We don't; we do wash their stuff separately to ours but use the same detergent - we figured that if they had fragrance sensitive skin or allergy issues or something we'd change, but no point in complicating things if they didn't.

  • I voted other because up until she was probably about 9 months I washed her clothes in free and clear detergent (any mainstream brand) but now her clothes get washed in the same detergent as ours. I also wash her clothes separately.

  • I chose other because sometimes I wash her stuff with Seventh Generation Baby detergent and sometimes I put it in with our stuff. And somestimes (gasp!) she wears new stuff before it's washed. If I run a load of just her stuff, that I use the Baby detergent. But when I run out, I might not get more.

  • I wash his clothes separately in Dreft.  BUT, that's only because I got a giant thing of it at Costco for cheap.  If they're out next time, I'll wash his stuff in the same stuff as ours -- Kirkland eco-friendly.  He seems fine snuggled up against my clothes all the time.

  • We do-- but that is only because Brooke has sensitive skin. I wish she didn't though. She has a mild case of eczema and since we're not sure of what specifically causes it (doctor says it could be heat, perfumes, detergent, etc), our pedi. recommended we wash with Dreft.
  • We use Planet detergent for her clothes and the CDs. It's one of the ones I saw recommended for CDs.

  • We use ECOS free and clear for her clothing mainly because I bought a big ol' jug of it intending to use it on our CDs and then read that it's not great for them (although one site I found said it'd be okay).

So once we use that up we'll just wash her stuff in the same detergent we use...All Free and Clear.  For dipes we use 7th Generation Gentle Detergent.

We wash her clothes separate from ours but that's mainly because she has a full load on her own usually.  Plus it makes it easier not to lose baby socks if they're with other small clothing items!

  • I put Other since baby isn't here yet. I'm planning on sticking with what we currently use, which is 7th generation free & clear. If it turns out he has sensitive skin, then I'll start researching special baby detergent. But I'm anticipating (hoping) that the fact that it's 7th generation and free and clear, that's it's about as natural and artificial-chemical-free as you can get.

Literally just yesterday I bought a thing of Seventh Generation Baby detergent.  It was on sale at Whole Foods, and our crib delivered yesterday, so I wanted to wash all the bedding and put it on.  I don't know if I'll use this forever, though.  I'll probably end up using some sort of free and clear version on regular detergent, rather than specifically "baby" kind.

  • A friend of mine said she used it for the first yr and that was it, because their skin isn't quite as sensitive after that.  So, that's what my plan is too.  We use a free and clear for our clothes though, because my husband is sensitive to a lot of perfume/dye type things, so I figure it'll probably be ok.
  • what makes laundry detergent specifically "baby" detergent?  we use costco's free and clear for our own stuff.  i hadn't really thought about it yet, but had assumed we'd only get special detergent for CD's.

I think that is heavily disputed.  Dreft has an obvious scent to me and I have seen a couple of blog/article posts about how someone uncovered a perfume in it even though it's not on the ingredients list.

Also many of the baby detergents say something about no detergent residue which should mean they don't have softeners, brightners, or enzymes added - but then if you read up on it they usually do.

I got some method baby detergent at one of my showers and it smells very nice, I use it every so often on the baby load and our sheets and Jack hasn't had a reaction to it, but once it runs out I won't re-buy just because I prefer the types I use on our regular clothes (planet and biokleen - biokleen has an essential oil scent but it's very light).

I wash clothes as needed and have done adult/baby stuff together but usually he has enough clothes/blankets/towels for his own load by the end of the week.

This is so odd, my friends baby has a BAD case of eczema and she had to take him to a derm. THe derm Dr told her to ONLY wash her stuff in All free and clear or Purex Free and Clear and NOTHING else. She was using Dreft initially and the derm said that TONS of babies have reactions to it because of the chemicals and perfumes...

As for us, we've always used Purex Free and clear. We use it for her clothes, our clothes and it's CD safe.

That IS strange. Sometimes I do question things our pedi. says, but luckily, she hasn't had a bad reaction to the Dreft... so we will probably continue using that. :)

  • we already use all f&c so that is what i am using for his clothes too.  I have a severe allergy to perfume in detergents so i'm afraid he'll have the same, but i plan to wash his separately.  MH works in a chemical plant and i don't him to get any residue from that
