I went to the dr. today for a sore throat, sore neck, and headache. I was positive for strep throat, but the dr. was also slightly concerned about meningitis. She gave me antibiotics for the strep, and wants me to come back in tomorrow. Well, I just got a follow-up voicemail from her asking if I'm feeling any better, and if not I should go to the ER for a spinal tap.
Anyone ever had experience with meningitis? What were your symptoms? I googled it, but the only symptom I have on the list is a sore neck. No fever, vomiting, etc.
Re: Anyone ever had meningitis?
I had viral meningitis about 5 years ago, and I truly thought I was dying. I had been pretty sick for a couple of days, but the day I finally went to the doctor I woke up and had to lay back down again and truly thought it was my last day on Earth. No exaggeration.
I somehow drove myself to the doctor and it was connected to the hospital. He took one look at me and wheeled me directly to the ER. I remember there was a kid with a bad broken arm but they saw me first (I felt totally guilty!!!). I was in so much pain until they started an iv with some sort of pain med--it was the first relief I had in days. I barely even remember the spinal tap--I was so out of it from being sick.
I didn't have any vomiting, but I did have a high fever. They kept me in the hospital overnight and sent me home with meds and painkillers and orders to rest.
I had viral in high school and like the pp, genuinely thought I was dying. Seriously. I had to curl up in the fetal position because my neck hurt so bad and my head literally felt like it was going to explode. I turn my head from side to side at all. My only other symptom was the chills from a very high fever (104). I went to the hospital as soon as my mom got home from work (about an hour after my head and neck started hurting). I hope it's not meningitis and I hope you feel better soon.
ETA: I meant to type I couldn't turn my head at all.
Thanks for the responses. I really don't want to go to the ER but I may have to. I spoke to the dr again, and she said to take extra strength tylenol and if the soreness in my neck and my headache don't go away, then I need to head to the ER. I took the tylenol about an hour ago, and still no change.
Hoping it goes away soon.
She didn't say what effect meningitis could have on my pregnancy, so I'm very worried about the possibilities there. Thanks again for your responses!
Just a quick google search showed that most strains shoudn't hurt the baby. GL to you!
Thanks!! I was scared to google, lol. Never know what you'll find, and I didn't want to freak out unnecessarily
Happy to hold your google hand! :-) I hope it's nothing and you feel better really soon.
Yup..last year, 6 months after I had DD I had viral meng..I thought I was just having a crazy migraine, but I had it for like 7 straight days and felt AWFUL..I was in the hosp for about 3 days and that was hell being without DD (she was still bfing) anyway they couldn't do a spinal tap to confirm it (they wanted to ) because when they did a CAT scan on me they saw a cyst on my brain..ugh (thats a whole different long story) but they were almost positive w/o the spinal that it was the meng..basically told me there wasn't much to do about it and there is no cure..just pain meds!
GL and I hope you feel better..
