Baby Names

Oh, darn it! Realized a problem with our name.

The problem, in short, is an unintended matchiness with two "Au" names.

We've been mulling over names this whole pregnancy and finally settled on one last night. It was such a good feeling. I really didn't care between our final two (Adam and Austin) and I wanted DH to really love it since I got to name our first son after my dad (John) who passed away.

Great! Name is picked, we were all smiles last night and telling our toddler this morning to kiss Austin in my belly, etc.

Then it hits me. Our girl name has always been Audrey. We didn't find out the sex with our first pregnancy, so I even had two sets of wall letters all ready to go, one of them being Audrey. I love it, DH loves it -- and I've had my heart set on it for about 15 years, long before the recent popularity surge, because I'm a huge Audrey Hepburn fan.

So, John, Austin and Audrey...yuck, right? Or am I over thinking this? We think we'll have 3, maybe even 4, but if #2 is as much as a handful as #1 we might stop there. ;) And if I have more, I still might not have a girl.

So do I just let go of that name I've loved forever, Audrey, for an imaginary daughter I might never have since we finally picked a name for a boy we DO have?

Thoughts? Man, what a bummer! There was a problem with Adam, too, some close friends almost used that for the first son so I keep wondering if they are considering it for a future son.

WWYD?

  • I wouldn't care if close friends used Adam, then didn't. I would still use Adam if that is what DH and I loved. Not to sound snarky, but it's hard enough to find a name that the two of you agree on, right? You can't let other people's hypothetical babies influence your naming decision.

I personally slightly prefer Adam to Austin, though both are fine names. If you are quite sure you will have more children, and would certainly use Audrey for a girl, I would probably avoid using Austin.

I know where you're coming from. I loved the name Audra but DH's older daughter is Aubrey and that is too matchy for my liking. Also DH liked Ashley for our DD but I love Asher and didn't want to take it off the table should we have a son.

  • You're over-thinking it. What if you never have a girl? Between Austin and Adam, I would choose the one I love, and not worry about a hypothetical phantom daughter that you may or may not ever have.

  • I think you are overthinking it. If you like Austin and Audrey I don't see a reason not to use them. Personally, I prefer Adam over Austin, but I don't see what the big deal is if you have a son named Austin and a daughter named Audrey.

I also wouldn't not use the name Adam just because some friends of yours considered it for their son.

  • I agree with you about Adam and not letting others dictate the name. The thing is, this is a super sweet couple and they would NEVER tell us or even hint if they were upset by it. I would just really wonder if it bothered them on the inside or if it dissuaded them from using it in the future.

DH is the one who finally pulled the trigger last night and said, "Let's do it. Let's just name him Austin."

I was really hoping for him to finally have a strong opinion so I haven't even mentioned this little Austin vs. Audrey glitch, because the one time he really speaks up on something like this I don't want to have a reason to turn it down. I'm sure it hasn't occurred to him since we've only had boys on the brain, and I know he really likes Audrey, too. I guess it's worth mentioning to him.

This. And I wouldn't not name your LO Adam because of hypothetical phantom son your friends may or may not ever have either.

  • If you are still unsure of the Austin/Audrey thing after you talk to DH, perhaps consider Ashton?

  • You're completely overthinking this. There is nothing wrong with your choices. Those are not circumstances that mean you can't or shouldn't use the names you love. It's fine.

  • If you love Audrey more than Austin, then I'd go with Adam. FWIW, I prefer Adam over Austin.

  • While I don't think Austin and Audrey sound bad together, they are a touch too matchy for me. I would go with Adam if you plan on having more children. If the next one is a boy, you could have John, Adam and Austin then. :)
    Blank!
  • You probably both like Austin b/c of it's similarity to Audrey.
  • Austin, John, and Audrey is fine!  I think you're overthinking it!
  • I don't think it's an issue at all! Stick with Audrey, it's the most beautiful girl's name :)

Keep the name you love. DH is Douglas, with brothers David and Sean. Sean's name doesn't start with a D and no one cares. No one thinks the others are too matchy either.

I think John, Austin and Audrey are fine together.  Even Austin and Audrey alone aren't that matchy to me.  They are both simple names, so it makes the whole "matchy" thing less of an issue, IMO.

Go for it, and if you have a girl down the road Audrey will be great.

  • I agree with the others. You are over thinking it. I wnet crazy with names too. just choose the one you love. If you have a girl later on, name her Audrey. And if you want to use Adam, go ahead. They didn't use it, so its fair game. I was worried about all my children having exactly the same initials. lol. but if we have a boy, he might end up with the same initials as our daughter. CAS.  I'm letting DH pick the boy name. I think its a girl, again. So I picked a different first initial, but both will have the same middle Initial. CAS and EAS.
  • Classic case of major overthinking.  You need to chill and use the name you like right now for the child you are having right now.

Use it.. first of all I think Austin and Audrey sound fine together as sibs.  Second of all I just don't believe in giving something you love up now for a "possible future" baby... too many ifs there to let it go
  • I actually like matchy names like Austin and Audrey. But don't worry about what you're going to name your son based on what you want to name a hypothetical daughter.
