Your thoughts on being green - poll included

How green are you?  How green do you care to be?[Poll]

Re: Your thoughts on being green - poll included

  • For those of you who think it is overrated and trendy, does that mean you don't recycle?  I have heard plenty of people say that they don't buy organic because it is trendy (I do buy a lot of organic, but I can see why others don't), but there is a lot more to being "green" than buying certain products.  It is quite obvious that recycling, using less paper towels, etc, is good for the planet, and has nothing to do with being trendy.  Just curious...

  • We're green, but mainly in the area of family safety versus environmental preservation (although that's a pleasant side effect). But my primary focus isn't saving the trees.

And when I say "we", I mean "me", and DH goes along for the ride.

  • I voted "high priority".  I'm scared that some think the information out there is propaganda.

  • i said other because we are somewhere between your second and third choice.   we do try to make an effort-we recycle, i shop for used items (garage sales etc), i had a garage sale to sell things to others

but on the flip side we use disposable diapers, i don't use organic cleaning supplies, we still own an SUV

so while we try, we could do better.   we haven't really changed too many things in our lives.

  • Other.

We believe it is important to do what we can (within reason) to take care of our little piece of the planet.  And we do those things (composting, recycling, etc).

Global warming as an idea is bunk.  There is not enough data to support it even a little bit.  There is just as much data (in fact more)  that supports the idea that the earth has cyclical temperature trends and sometimes those trends reach extremes, nothing about our current cycle is any different than any other historical cycle.

That doesn't mean that I don't think it's important to be mindful of the beautiful Earth that we have been given and to take good care of it.  I don't think that you have to believe the "global warming" ridiculousness to be a conscientious citizen of the Earth.

  • I think I referred too much to just the planet side of being green.  As babypuplov touched on, what about how it affects your family?  I should have mentioned this more in my question.  Maybe I will edit...
  • I think I'm probably a weird mix of a couple of options. We are just starting to recycle, we buy as much organic/local food as we can, I drive an SUV{but thinking about getting a "clean" diesel version when my lease is up}, we're switching to all eco-friendly cleaning products. I am "green" more for my family and our health then for the planet. Don't get me wrong, I really like the planet, but it's not my #1 reason for all that I do.
  • I picked other. We have always been recyclers but we've also started using more re-usable products, CFL bulbs, unplugging appliances when not in use, etc. But, we initially started doing it to save money, LOL. Not to be green.
  • I do "green" things because I think it is right for me and right for being a conscious, responsible person, not because the government and media and other groups are telling me I need to do so.  I think there is a lot of hype about going green and while ultimately many of these efforts have a positive impact in our environment, I do not enjoy having it shoved down my throat by way of government mandates and laws - a lot of bounds are overstepped in my opinion in the name of politically correct greenness.

I am not an "uber" green person, but we recycle, I try to watch our general consumption of things, I try to reuse things and I am much more conscious about what I put in the garbage and what chemicals we use.  But yeah, I drive a V8 and so does my husband.  We use disposable diapers, etc.  I think we could be a lot worse and in general consider us incredibly responsible people in the big picture and probably even more so than some "green" people out there...

  • I do believe that being green is important, and I take reasonable steps to be green, however, I do not believe in wasting green (as in money) to be green. I think that's a whole lot of gimmicks, and marketing.  It's quite common for companies to slap the word "natural" on a product and mark it up but natural means a whole lot of nothing these days other than $$$ in company's pockets. I will gladly be green if it doesn't require me to spend extra to do so, especially if I can save $.

  • Though our family is very green, we began our movement to save money above anything else.

We now only shop at the farmers market (when it is open) rather than at the store, we CD, we use cloth instead of TP, mama pads and diva cup instead of tampons and liners, cloth rags for the swiffer, unpaper towels, vinegar for cleaning rather than any other products, make our own soap/detergent.

We do drive a truck but we are looking into doing a cooking oil conversion to our diesel engine. However we have only one car. i stay at home so need for an extra car/gas/insurance...

We also buy our milk from a company that uses glass bottles (Oberweis) to avoid creating more trash .... the company pays you back for returning the bottles and they are reused.

We use freecycle.org and craigslist.org to buy/sell/give/receive most of the things we need/want ... except underwear of course!!

And about global warming, lets just say Al Gore is a complete moron! (and no I am not a Republican)

Really, even with the Dust Bowl in OK back in the 1930's?  Seems like that would be a reminder of how easily humans can ruin the environment, on a smaller scale.

ABSOLUTELY.  Your opinion is what I want.

  • I guess for me its pretty important. Not my first priority.  I am a recycling maniac. My recycle pick up guys say we recycle more than anyone else in the community- so for me that is important. We might have one bag of actual TRASH a week.

I try not to use product that is wasteful- paper towels for example. I use bar mops and wash them.

we installed water efficient toliets and shower heads.

There is a lot more we could be doing- but some things like 'green' laundry/cleaning detergents I really don't buy into. I am pretty picky with what i use to clean my house.

Thanks so much!  I love when others change up their siggy pic; it's always fun to see them in a new way.  I'm not very good about it, but I try to be!  :-)

  • We are in line with what a pp said, about how the "green" things we do are done mostly to benefit our family, and being good for the earth is a nice by-product. For instance, I decided a while back that I wanted to buy more organic produce, which turned into organic meat and dairy, and all that evolved into buying sustainable agricultural products locally, whenever possible. I use green cleaning and lawn products if I can, because I don't want the kids around more chemicals than they have to be. That sort of thing. We also use use disposable diapers, though, live in a big house, etc., so we could do a lot better.
  • i also voted high priority.  whether global warming is a hoax or not, i think it's extremely important to take care of our planet and conserve our natural resources.  it bothers me to no end when people who believe global warming is a hoax do absolutely nothing to help conserve resources, etc.  if you feel that way, that's perfectly fine, but we as people on this planet and citizens of the country that pollutes more than any other, i believe it is our civic duty to do what's right.  also imo, americans need to learn to live less frivously anyways, and what a better way to start!
