I want to start couponing but it all seems so daunting. I don't want to spend hours looking and organizing them. I also don't want to spend hours at the store trying to find things on sale etc. so give me you best tips. TIA
I stick with one or two stores that I know inside out
I have a coupon accordian folder- like the one you file bills in, arranged by aisles in the store
Don't use your coupons IMMEDIATLY- bank them because they will most likely NOT have those items on sale the week the coupon comes out- keep watching your circulars because the item will most likely go on sale before the coupon expires.
Every week check the circular for the sales then paper clip the coupons you want to use with the sales that week the circular so they are there for you. But take your coupon file folder with you too because there may be unadvertised sales
Don't over do it with the internet coupons. Be very selective with what you print out because 1- not all stores take them (ask at the counter) 2- sometimes the ink isn't worth the cost of the coupon IMO because most print out a whole ad on the rest of the piece of paper. 3- they expire earlier than regular coupons 4- don't just hit print for the coupon, check your circulars first to make sure they the item is on sale that week
DO NOT JUST BUY SOMETHING BECAUSE YOU HAVE A COUPON- my mom does this and she's seriously a boarder-line hoarder when it comes to grocery shopping. Shampoo and deoderant will always go on sale again and there will always be other coupons, there is no need to have 25 bottles of shampoo laying around the house just 'because it was a good deal.
couponing is good- however it is NOT worthwild until you know WHAT THINGS cost. And what a good deal is. You should only use coupons in addition to a sale/good price.
Because if you don't you will still OVERPAY with a coupon if you don't buy at a good deal.
So learn how to comparision shop- learn how to check unit prices etc. buying by volume/bulk isn't always the best. Price out and find a good price PER ITEM. Think- how many rolls in a bundle of paper towels- or TP. (divide the sale price less coupon by the # of items)- find your 'sweet price' per item and then use that price as a reference point.
you should ALWAYS be doing this with diapers especially. And everything- yogurt- etc.
I am big into couponing and teach my friends how to do it. I have a blog all about being an Organized Homemaker and a ton on there about couponing including a whole grouping of posts called Couponing - How To. If you go there, you can click on the side on Couponing - How To and it will bring up the posts I have written on couponing. I break it down to make it really simple. Read in order of furthest back to most recent to get it in order.
