Two Under 2

How do you put them both to bed at the same time if you are alone?

DH and I usually each take a girl around bedtime. We cannot figure out how to put our girls to bed if one of us isn't home for bedtime. DD#1 (28 mo) goes to bed at 7 and we start DD#2 (5.5 mo) bedtime process at 6 and she's asleep sometime between 6:30 and 7. When DH travels for work I ask a neighbor to come over to play with DD#1 while I put DD#2 to sleep. We need a better solution though. DD#1 is only now just starting to be able to sit quietly and watch Caillou or something but it's really inconsistent and sometimes she screams for us if we're upstairs while we're downstairs. DD#2 likes to nurse quietly in her room without the toddler around. How do you do it?

You can try nursing # 2 while lying in your bed and at the same time have #1 behind you cuddling with you or you can read some books at the same time. It's been working for us for the afternoon nap. Once the little one is asleep you can transfer her to her crib and  you can play with #1 or get her to go to sleep. If you are lucky they both fall asleep as the same time.

  • i have to have #1 down before even attempting #2.  can you slowly push one of their bedtimes back?

  • They go to bed at the same time (8PM). I walk them upstairs and I put DD down, turn her music on and tuck her in (DS hang about while I do so). Then we walk across the hall to DS's room where we read a book, then go brush our teeth and then back into his room where I lay him down, tuck him in and kiss him goodnight.

Then, I go downstairs. They both STTN until about 7AM.

Me too.  I'm alone for bedtime 5 nights a week, so I get DS down (bath and books while DD hangs out with us in her bouncy seat) then I put DD on a playmat and take DS into his room to get him into bed.  Once he's down I start DD's bedtime routine.

  • I bathe them both and put #2's jammies on while #1 is in the bath.  Then we brush teeth and I carry the baby to #1's room.  The baby sits and plays while I put #1's jammies on and read him a book.  Then we say night night to everything in his room, and I take the baby across the hall to his room where I sing and rock him to sleep.  #1 plays in his room or he comes over and sits quietly in the baby's room (the lights are off, it's clearly bedtime...I have no idea why he is quiet, but it works).  Then I put #2 to sleep and carry #1 to his bed, sing him his own song, and tuck him in.

  • Now, I'll give them both a bath together, DD2 in the ring-seat thing.

After bath, DD2 chills in DD1's room while I brush DD1's teeth and put on her PJs. Depending on time, we might read some books, either in DD1 or 2's room.

Then it's up to DD1 whether she wants to play with her cars in her room or come quietly play in DD2's room while I get her to bed. I keep the FP aquarium sleep soother in there..it's no longer on DD2's crib because she kept rolling under and getting her head stuck. But DD1 loves that thing, so it's on the floor for her to play with. DD2 is super easy to get to bed.. I just change her and feed her and put her down. If DD1 starts getting loud, I ask her to go to her room and I quickly finish up with DD2. Then I go read a couple more books to DD1 and put her to bed.

When DD2 was going to bed later then DD1, we would just skip DD1's bath. I'd do the whole bedtime/teeth brushing/reading books routine with DD2 playing on the carpet. Then I'd put DD2 in her crib w/ the FP aquarium for 5 mins while I tucked DD1 in.

  • My boys are 36 mos and 20 mos.

Right now, they both go down together.  We read scriptures, brush teeth, say prayers, then I put DS#1 in his bed and DS #2 in his crib (they share a room).  I turn on a little lamp and the fan, then close the door and they play / talk for a few minutes before falling asleep.

We've been doing it this way since for about the last 8 months.  Before that, I would just hold the baby while I put #1 down and did his bedtime routine, then I put the baby down.

  • I put all 3 to bed a lot. DS goes down first while the girls wait quietly in one of the bedrooms. Then I will read a story to the girls and put them to bed.

When DS was little, I would leave the girls in the playroom to play for a bit while I nursed DS and put him down (I just stopped BFing him 2 months ago).......
