January 2011 Moms

Destination Maternity really grills you!

We have a new one in our mall, so I was in there yesterday checking it out (they sell Motherhood Maternity and Pea in a Pod stuff) and bought some Preggi Pops.

The girl was way excited to get me in the system-she asked me how far along I was, my phone number, email, address, due date ("You're the first one for Jan, OMG!!!!" Confused), etc. Then it was, will you make a donation to March of Dimes, which is great I don't mind, it was just a lot of questions to buy a $5 box of candy. I think I may stick to Target and Babies R' Us where they mind their own business.

Re: Destination Maternity really grills you!

  • Motherhood does that too.  Very soon, you will start getting lots of mail related to baby (coupons, samples, etc.).  Your mailman will be one of the first to know you are pregnant!

  • That's for sure! I remember going through that with DS. THe lady tried to push me into buying maternity wear too...I was 8 weeks, she wanted me to try on their pregnancy pillow thing and try on stuff for my 2nd/3rd trimester. Uh, no thank you, I'll come back when I actually NEED clothes, thank you...
  • Yeah I figured I'd get attacked with junk email now, but I don't mind, sometimes there are coupons in there!

She was smart enough not to push me into clothes yet, but she did try to sell me stretch mark cream (I already have some TYVM). I think I would have been pissed if she implied I needed maternity clothes at 5 weeks. I was already sporting a baby doll dress and feeling fat and bloated.

Haha...the pillow!  I forgot about that!

  • LoL, I was just there last weekend and got the same drill and she was surprised when I said my due date. I knew I didn't need maternity stuff yet but there was some really cute stuff that would fit now and when pregnant. I hope they didn't think I was too crazy, besides I was in there with my best friend who is 7 months pregnant.

Ok, the real reason I went in was so that I could try the strap-on bumps they keep in the dressing rooms...

I went with two of my friends and they talked my into trying on the pillow. We had some good laughs, then I realized I really will look like that in a few months. Lol.

  • gotta say I love the pillow LOL not that I'll have a petite little preggy belly LOL I'll probably look far more lumpy and chubby LOL but it's nice to dream LOL btu YES they are HARD SELLERS in that place, I think in the back the managers must threaten them with electorcution if they miss a single sale LOL I went to buy a bra and left feeling like i'd been interogated by the CIA of big belly land! LOL and ebcause i was in sales fo a long time i get irked with the hard sell tactics and tell the girls, Hey I understand you're here to sell, but i'm here to shop, let me look around please, I really aprecite it. ... they tend to back off, but wow those girls must take some sort of uppers before they hit the sales floor I've never met a more perky peppy army of gals LOL what they need to do is hire a handsome guy in each store who aproaches and asks if you're shopping for a friend.. because ofcorse you dont look pregnant.. then when you say you are five months in he replies.. i'm sorry I should have known that from the glow about you, I apologize... THEN i'd buy that fancy shmancy loation that's suposed to stop strech marks and make my baby smarter at the same time! LOL

I had this EXACT experience at Motherhood Maternity when I went in for my preggie pop drops.

I think you should open up a store like that!

  • Thanks for reminding me!  I was grilled when I was pregnant with DD from everything to my due date to asking if I wanted to open up a college savings acount!  Ummmm hello!  I was like 10 weeks at that point.

I would go in there only if there were other customers in there so they would leave me along!
