Another one for the lushes...help

I've read tons of stuff about how a lot of women drink before they know they are pregnant and everything is fine as long as you stop drinking ASAP. But then I also am reading stuff about how the first few weeks are the most important in development and by drinking you could hurt LO. I'm obviously asking because before BFP I was on business travel and for my company, that always includes a lot of drinking. I didn't really think it was possible I could be pregnant with all of the factors pointing to the fact that it would be very hard for me to get pregnant easily - so I went ahead and drank. Stupid I know. And now, because of my stupidity, I'm freaking out...any words of wisdom?

  • My words of wisdom are just relax. There's nothing you can do to change that you drank and chances are, your baby is perfectly fine. You are going to stress yourself out over something you can no longer control.

  • and let me add, it takes a lot for a baby to end up with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Babies are surprisingly resiliant. I used to work in child welfare and can't tell you how many kids I worked with that were exposed to way more harsh things such as meth and cocaine all the way through utero, who did surprisingly well and had little to no issues.
  • I say no need to worry either.  I was not drinking very much at all around the time I conceived DD, I would say I drank 5 times total that entire year.  We were TTA that cycle so I thought I was safe on CD8.  I had many shots of tequilla when I was about 10dpo (before I got my BFP of course) and I was so upset when I found out I was KU.  I cried to my MW and she said it was fine, and DD is perfect!

  • Don't worry, baby will be fine. There is no reason to worry. I wasn't trying to get pregnant with DS#1 when I did. DH and I were newly married and younger and had a very active social/drinking life with our friends. I drank a lot while I must have been pregnant with DS. I freaked out just like you when I got a BFP. Just try not to think about it.

  • I'm in the same boat. Took a test on cd11 - negative- then drank like a fish for the next 2 nights. BFP a few days later and spazzed. It was early, it will be fine. I read that 5 percent of babies born to heavy drinkers during pg get FAS. So 95 percent of babies exposed to repeated heavy drinking throughout pg are fine. I found that surprisng and reassuring.

    this exactly! :)

  • My OB said the only reason you would have to worry is if you are a chronic alcoholic. Your LO will be fine.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm a worrier normally, but this whole pregnancy thing has taken me to a whole new level....
