Natural Birthing Mama's - my hat's off to you!

Every time I start thinking about it - I watch some show or some woman going through labor without and EPI and it scares me out of it!!

Props to those of you that can do it and want to :)

(Watch, I'll go into labor so quickly it won't even be an option for me to have meds...haha, that's my luck!!)

  • Don't jinx yourself. ;-)

I'm planning to go natural and I'm really excited about giving it a try.  The ipod is loaded with relaxation music and the herbal wrap and massage roller are packed.

  • Trust me, I don't look forward to being in pain.  But I couldn't stand the epidural (had it with DD when I wasn't planning to).  I panicked when I couldn't move my legs, and couldn't stand being numb.  By the end of the labor, I had had them turn it off for several hours.  The pain was better than feeling trapped for me.
  • I'm going natural at a birth center where I won't be tied to a bed with an IV and I'll be able to use the hot tub whenever I want and deliver in any position I want.  My hat goes off to the women who go natural in a hospital because everything about that place goes against what your body should naturally do.

Your experience is exactly why I am going to try to not do the epi.  For me it's a control thing and with the epi you don't even have control of your legs.

  • I hope do a natural birth.  Epidurals kind of freak me out.  My sis had one last year and the medicine went too high in her body that affected her lungs and she couldn't breath or even communicate to them that she couldn't do so.

I can't deliver at a center b/c of insurance and AMA and I was really disappointed for awhile.  After attending our birthing class, we found out that our hospital has the tubs, squat bars, birthing balls, light dimmers, etc and the staff is just as supportive to  natural deliveries as they are to epidurals.  Also, if there were an emergency, I would be 2 doors from the OR rather than have to be transported so for me, it's the best of both worlds.

It's not neccessarily the hospital that can be restrictive it's the providers.  I am delivering, hopefully natural, in a local hospital with midwives.  They have the tub, balls, swatting bars, stools, etc.and I can push however/wherever I want.

I never planned on the epi with DD, but chickened out in labor.  I won't be doing that again.  After going through the pain of the actual delivery (after having turned off the epi), I know I can do it and am not afraid.  It hurts, yes, but it's also not permanent and doesn't last long.

This was me the first time around, too, except I never had mine turned off.  I had panic attacks several times about not being in control of my body, and I still have side effects from the epidural.

I am so glad that we have the option of a midwifery center in a hospital here.  Meds aren't an option when you're there, but if something goes wrong, L&D is in the same building.  We would have done a home birth if a hospital was closer to our home, and there are no freestanding birth centers in our area.

  • The media totally sensationalizes childbirth to make it look like the most painful horrific experience imaginable. I think it totally psychs women out to think it can't be done without meds. But the truth is, epidurals haven't been around since the beginning of time and our  bodies were built to do this!

Ditto this. I'm going to attempt a drug free birth at a hospital, but i choose a hospital that is 'natural birth friendly' with all of the above.

We are doing a hypnobirth at a hospital.  I'm fortunate that my hospital fully supports and encourages natural birthing.  They offer birthing tubs, encourage moms in labor to walk around/ shower, and put the baby immediately on mom after birth for bonding.  I think more and more hospitals are getting with it that natural can be best for many moms.

I went med-free with my son and it WAS absolutely the most painful experience imaginable. That said, I plan to do it again, lol. I like the fact that I let my body do what it was meant to do.
