caffeine

Have you given up caffeine all together?

I switched to a half caff coffee mix a few months ago and thought that would be about all I could do. Now I'm thinking I'm ready to make the plunge into full decaf. I only have about a cup and half of this mix and no caffeine the rest of the day, but I feel like I shouldn't even be drinking that.

Re: caffeine

  • No, I still drink a half a cup of regular coffee in the morning. I drank coffee during my pregnancy with my son and he is perfectly fine. For the most part, he's been a great sleeper. lol

As long as you keep your total intake under 2 small cups of coffee a day, that's fine. Everything in moderation.

for the most part I avoid caffeine completely (I was never a coffee drinker, just a diet coke addict), but when I'm DEAD tired at noon and not sure how to make it to 5:30, I let myself have a can.  Sometimes I feel guilty about it, but I keep reminding myself that baby wouldn't appreciate mommy falling asleep at the wheel.

  • I went cold turkey about a month ago. Being so tired makes me want something to wake me up but I am just trying to muttle through.

  • I've given it up completely*, but I would not be opposed to drinking a cherry coke if one day it just sounded really good. During our looong wait of TTC, I cut down to only a few sodas per month.  I never was a coffee drinker.  When I became pregnant, it was a pretty easy transition to go cafeine free.  But, I have no doubt that I'll have a little craving now and then for an ice cold cherry coke or a coke from McDonalds... and I'll likely give in to it when it happens.

    * = chocolate excluded!

mmmm chocolate! I find it very hard to remember chocolate has caffeine in it. I think it would be worth giving up coffee for chocolate!

  • I love, love, love coke zero and gave it up completely.  I'm pretty sure I could get away with having a little, but I'm afraid if I do it'll be like pringles (once you pop you can't stop).  It's really the only thing I'm craving right now.
  • No. Most days I still have about 8 oz. You can have up to 300 mg safely a day. Just be careful b/c caffeine is in more than just coffee. It's in chocolate, soda and several other types of food.

So if you drink coffee just watch the other stuff you consume! GL!

  • I allow myself caffeine once in a great while. Like today I'm having s McCafe iced mocha, but that's about it, and I have that sparingly.
  • Yeah, I switched to decaf, about 2 weeks ago.  I'd been cutting down a lot and went pretty much completely off month ago, but April was total craziness and a lot of social situations cropped up where I would be obvious and obnoxious if I insisted on decaf.

  • I gave up sodas back in February and haven't had one since. I switched over to sweet tea though. I'm down to 1 glass of sweet tea a week, and I'm hoping to be done with that soon.

  • In the past week and a half since my bfp, I have only consumed 2 diet cokes.  I used to consume 2-3 a day.  I only drink it when I am really dragging.

Nope, I'll just stay under 200 mgs a day. I usually avoid full-caff coffee anyway (since I breastfeed), but cappuccinos and lattes have much less caffeine, so I drink plenty of those. The chemical process used to decaffeinate things concerns me a bit, so I prefer to just stick with the moderation approach. And I drink lots of iced tea, just mix it with lemonade to cut down on my caffeine intake.

And most soda has minimal caffeine per serving, but I stay away from it anyway when pregnant because I'm wary of the artificial sweeteners. Which sucks, because I LOVE diet coke with lime.

I pretty much avoid it, but on weekends I might have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

  • I have not, and can not. I used to just drink 1 coffee traveler mug a day (about 12 oz.) of regular coffee. I've since switched to half caff and only pour a 8oz. cup. I don't think I'll be able to give it up all together. I don't drink cokes, and rarely have tea, so this is the only caffeine I have in a day. I'm one of those that would get a massive migrane if I missed my morning cup. So far, the smaller half caff has worked, so I'll probably just stick with that.
  • I actually gave up coffee several months ago, so that hasn't been a problem. But I have been craving a regular coke like mad. It's what I generally use to help ease a queasy stomach and with the constant nausea now, I think about drinking one every day. I'm sure I will give in occasionally but I'm trying to be good!

I used to have 1 cup of coffee a day, but I've cut back to 2 cups a week (basically to help with the constipation).   I'm sure I won't be able to even smell coffee soon, so it will probably be a non-issue for me.

I'd talk to your doctor about which is worse - the amount of caffeine you get from caffeinated coffee or the possible by-products of decaffeination that may be in decaff.  I've read in a few places that decaff isn't any better than regular because of that.

  • I gave it up cold turkey, but I'm really dragging.  I used to have 1 med DD iced coffee a day and 1 can of diet pepsi...  I miss them so much!
  • I gave it up cold turkey about one month ago. It was terrible headaches/extreme fatigue for about 4 days. I was in the routine of having 20 oz. coffee in the morning, a Diet Coke at 11:30am, and another Diet Coke with dinner. AND Excedrin for headaches. No wonder I went through some withdrawl. Geesh.
  • I've given up caffeinated coffee completely.  I don't drink coffee as much as I used to, and when I do, it's definitely decaf.

The biggest problem I'm having is giving up sweet tea.  I LOVE sweet tea, but it is also caffeinated.

I'm thinking about buying an Iced Tea Maker, getting some decaf tea, and trying to live with iced tea that's not quite as sweet as I'm used to.

  • I will do one small cup in the morning if I feel I want it. Tried decaf and I can't drink it.
