January Birthday Parties

When I was younger, several people that had middle of winter birthdays would have a party in the spring or summer to celebrate instead of on their actual birthday so they could have nice weather for their parties.

Have you given any thought to how and when you'll be celebrating your future LO's birthday?

Me: We'll live in San Diego for the first few years at least so weather probably won't be much of a problem, but even if it were going to be really cold I'd probably still let LO have a party on his/her actual birthday. I just think its more special that way.

  • That's a good question. My birthday is late April so there is always a chance of rain, but I've had good luck for the most part. I think indoor birthday's can be fun. Especially when they are young and want to go to like a pizza place or a movie or whatever they do. But it will be sad not to have the option of a BBQ.

  • Wow that did not cross my mind. We have excellent weather here in January. In fact, we got married outside on Jan. 8 and it was gorgeous, sunny, high 60s. Kids parties don't have to be outside-there's lots of stuff you can do indoors-roller skating, bowling, movie theaters, Build-a-Bear, etc.

My bday is always on or around Memorial Day (it's the 25th-this coming Tuesday), so for me, and other people born in the summer, the problem was always that people had other plans or were out of town on my bday.

The nice thing about Jan, as we found with our wedding, was that people were all done with the holiday parties from Christmas and New Years, so they had a lull in their social calendar and were available. We had almost everyone we invited come to our wedding.

  • my B day is in november. I've had some awsome parties.. had one where I was so sad that all my friendshad swim parties.. o my mom rented the pool at the local YMCA doe a few hours and we swam in november (I was sooo the coolest kid in the 3rd grade that year!!) one year I really wanted a luau so mom and I agreed I'd have my party in the summer and wehad a huge deal with fireworks and everything (the kind you can buy at the store not professional or anything LOL we're far from rich)

another perk for our kids is that my mom andher husband live in Florida about a half hour from disney world!! I'm sure they'll ahve many a mickey mouse birthday :D

when kdis are young I keep things really really simple, but as they get older there's lots of ways to have fun in the winter. if my kids are anywhere near as into horses as I am i already have a dream of having a horsey party at a local riding school that has an indoor riding arena. My husband and I are also martial artists and the school we train at does karate birthday aprties, so I'm sure we'll go for that one. however we will be avoiding the dreaded build a bear party like the PLAGUE! LOL

  • My birthday is in January, and growing up, I definitely lived in a climate that got cold in January.

I don't remember birthday parties ever being an issue.  I had a couple at the skating rink (both roller and ice), one at a bowling alley, one at a community center near our house, and several actually inside our house.  We lived in a modest home that wasn't huge, but it had enough space for kiddos.

Also, there are a few more options these days thanks to places like JumpZone and other indoor inflatable places.

The only potential worry is if it snows on or around the party.  I remember having to postpone one or two until the following week, but it always worked out just fine.

I know I'm biased, but I think there are plenty of options for winter parties! : )

  • My birthday is in January and I live (and grew up) in Minnesota.  It was never a problem.  There were enough indoor party places.  I wouldn't have liked celebrating my birthday in the summer because then it not your actual birthday!

  • My daughter's birthday is 01/19 and it hasn't been an issue at all. This year we did a pool party with her daycare friends and it was a blast.

New baby is due 01/14 and while I know I will have the baby 1-2 weeks before then everyone keeps telling me how great it would be that they could just have a joint party now. I will not do that, I want them to be able to have their own theme, friends, etc...

On a side note, since her bday is so close to Christmas we ask family to do indoor/outdoor winter gifts for Christmas and outdoor summer/craft gifts for her birthday.

  • My dd's birthday is Dec 11th and we always have her party around her birthday.  I will do the same for this baby.
  • My birthday is Dec 15th and all my brothers had summer bday's. I always asked my mom if I could "save" my bday for the summer and she would always say sure if you can wait that long. Well I never could. My mom went out of her way to find fun indoor things. Lot's of sleep over parties. One year she rented a suite at a hotel and 8 of my little friends and I stayed there with her an we went to din and swam at the heated pool. It was so much fun! Just make sure to make it fun for them and they will love it!

  • My birthday is in the summer and my parents always insisted on throwing an outside party in the midday July sun.  I welcome a winter party.

  • My birthday is January 22. Born during an actual blizzard. Weather always sucked. Parties always rocked regardless. When you're a kid, your birthday is always awesome.
