Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When did your LO sleep in a crib at night?

I feel like my LO will never tolerate a crib.  We tried as soon as we brought him home from the hospital and we still don't have success.  We can get him to sleep in the swing for his naps but he still wants to be attached to me at night.  Ferber's sleep book says I can start training him at 3 or 4 months.  In the meantime I guess he's never going to go in his crib.  Am I alone or has anyone else experienced this?

Re: When did your LO sleep in a crib at night?

  • LO will sleep anywhere. We put him in his crib at two months because he was too long for his round bassinet. He loves it and has not complained once.

I havent experienced this but we didnt put DD in her crib until she was 3 months old. She did just fine with it at that age.

  • We put Jaiden in his crib at 6 weeks.
  • We moved DD from the PNP in our room to her crib at 10 weeks.

we moved DS to his crib at 10 weeks old.

It wasn't a quick or easy process, though. It took about a week and a half of doing it without stopping for him to have a normal night time sleep in there.

The best advice I can give you is 2 things.

    1. if you want your LO to be in his crib, make the decision and don't waver from it. You're going to be tired, it's going to be hard, but the more you stop and start the more confused your LO is going to be, and the harder it will be next time

    2. start with day time naps. When your LO starts to get drowsy or falls asleep during the day, move him into his crib. if he wakes and starts crying, pick him up, rock him, calm him and when he gets tired/falls asleep again, do it again

You can do this, good luck :)

  • We are currently working on it, we spend the first half of the night in the crib and then he goes into the swing for the early morning hours.  We are moving next weekend and then i'm going to have to commit fully to the crib.  The PP is right, its not easy and we did have to wait until about 4 mos... good luck.
  • We started with naps at 10 weeks, and she was in her crib at night at 3 months no problem.  She definitely needed the transitioning time, though.  At first, she would only nap 5-10 min, then wake up and look around.

My boys were in their cribs on day 2 but they were together, so I think that helped.  Tessa was in our room until we moved to a bigger house (about 2mos).  But, she was in a co-sleeper so the transition wasn't that bad.

Can you try in your room at first?

  • He has slept in his crib since he was 5 1/2 weeks old

  • We started little one in his crib around 2-3 weeks (before that was PnP or bouncy seat) and it didnt require any adjustment really.

    Goooood luck!

at 1 week old she started sleeping there.

Have you tried a paci for him? Also perhaps you can spray some of your perfume in the crib so it "smells like mommy"

  • 7 weeks, before that they shared a PNP in our room but started getting to big and moving too much to share. Now they sleep in their cribs every night 8pm-7am. My son is better at  napping in his crib during the day, my daughter rarely naps in her crib - too much to look at during the day! They both do naps in swing or car seat during the day, which I am trying to stop doing but it is so much easy to get them to sleep and with 2 it is a feat of magic just to have them nap around the same time period!  Stick out tongue

  • We had to put DS in his crib at 3 months because he was getting too long for his bassinet. It was hard the first few nights for me. But it only took him one night to get used to the idea.

We started with him in  the crib when he started sleeping for about 6 hrs at a time, which was at about 5 weeks or so old.

  • DD slept in her basinet in our bedroom, and then we transitioned her to the crib in her own room at 4 months. She did great with the transition. I find it helpful to put her in the crib at night after she's already fallen asleep.
  • We put her in her crib in her own room at 3.5 weeks.  It started out as an evening nap and she was doing so well we decided to try it for the night and it stuck.
  • DD has slept in her crib from day one that we got her, she was 4 weeks old. She loves her crib!!

  • Since he was 4 weeks old. We started a bedtime routine, doing the same things every night, and he has no problem going down.
  • DS slept in the PnP in our room till he was 10 weeks, then we moved him to the crib in his room for naps for 2 days, then full nights, and he did just fine. It was a bit of back and forth going in the room when he was napping to get him to go back to sleep, but it was worth it.
  • We started her in the crib after just the first couple days home.
