1st Trimester

Massage?

I called my RE to confirm with he that massages were okay; she said they were fine as long as they were not deep tissue.  I called to make an appt and requested someone with prenatal massage experience (just to be extra cautious) and was told they won't due massages on pregnant women until they are 14 weeks "for the safety of the baby."  Anyone else have this issue? Anyone's dr tell them to avoid massages during the 1st tri?

Re: Massage?

  • I've never heard of such a thing.  Maybe try another spa to see if they give you the same answer.

I have heard this as well.  I'm not sure why - maybe because they are worried about the "toxins" released from your muscles (the stuff they tell you to drink extra water to flush out) during massage hurting the baby?

  • Yep...just had the same thing happen to me last week. The spa said I had to wait untill my 2nd tri. Sad

  • It's the preference of the salon.  They don't want to be blamed for a mc even though massage can't cause one.  I would call a different place.

  • I have had 2 deep tissue massages during my first trimester so far. My doctor recommended both. I am suffering from upper back muscle spasms and this is the best drug-free treatment. All my doc said was to have them avoid the lower back and the feet. Apparently there are pressure points in your feet that can induce labor.

  • I've also heard this and read about it in some of my research BUT I believe it can be done by a professional who is licensed in prenatal massage.

     Good Luck!!!

  • Sorry, I'm totally creeping on this wall and saw this and just had to reply to it.

I'm an RMT (registered massage therapist) and an RMT Instructor in Canada and it is safe for a pregnant woman to get massages throughout her whole pregnancy as long as her pregnancy has been uncomplicated. Yes, you just have to avoid deep techniques on the back, but everything else is fine. There are pressure points (reflexology points) on the feet that are for the uterus and if stimulated they COULD induce contractions but ONLY IF contractions were going to start anyways. Massage or Reflexology CAN NOT cause a m/c.

You just have to find someone who is comfortable treating you. Spa or chiro clinics, they all have the same training!

  • Skells,

I had a deep tissue especially in my back area before I found out I was pregnant. What's the risk?
