Follow-Up to Nap Time Post

Hi ladies-

I posted something at the beginning of the week regarding my son's all-of-a-sudden refusal to take naps.  First, thanks for everybody that responded- the input was great.  I also wanted to let you know what my pediatrician suggested I do (we had an appointment yesterday).

She said that at his age (12-24 months) naps are still super important (especially because he's so much more mobile- he needs his rest for safety reasons now, too).  She said to continue to put him in his crib for two naps a day at the same time every day for at least 1 1/2- 2 hours each nap.  If he sleeps great, if he just has quiet time in his crib playing/talking than that is fine, too.  I asked- what if he cries the whole time?  She said that it might happen from time to time but if I'm OK with letting him complain for a while than she is, too.  She also said that kids at this age will go through phases where they'll nap great or they won't want to nap at all- but either way naps are still super important.

I just thought I'd share in case anybody else out there finds themselves in the same boat as us.  Thanks, again!

  • Let us know how that goes-

I tried that for about a week- and it was a TOTAL failure. Moving her to one nap at 11 months is the only thing that worked.

    ditto for DD1 here too.

I missed your OP, but have you tried moving his nap up by 30mins to an hour and doing just 1 nap a day? DD1 moved to 1 nap at 11 months and started taking a 4 hour nap from 1-5 every day. Once I switched to 1 nap, her crap naps started getting really long.. and it was pretty nice for me to get such a long break ;)

    GL to you!

  • He was taking two naps for at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours daily.  Once at 9 a.m. and again around 1 p.m.  Then he started complaining when I'd put him in this crib- crying & fussing.  After what my pediatrician suggested, I've decided that I'll put him in his crib at 9:30 and again at 2:30 for 2 hours each time.  I plan on trying this for a week or so to see if it takes.  Today, his 9:30 nap was great- he went right to sleep & was out until about 11:15.  The 2:30 nap- not so much.  He hasn't complained but I can hear him talking and this has been going on for the last hour.  We'll see...
