Your mom's pregnancy

What has she told you about her experience? Are you anticipating having similar symptoms and a similar birthing experience?

My mom was one of those perfect pregnant women who didn't touch a single thing that wasn't recommended, ate exactly, to the calorie, what the doctor said, gained only 25lbs, and "loooooved" being pregnant. She ate no refined sugar, not even her own baby shower cake. Confused

She carried high, so even though I was 2.5 weeks overdue, her cervix never softened enough and she ended up having to have 3 C-sections. She said it was good because she didn't have all that heavy full pressure on her cervix in the 3rd tri, but bad, obviously because it led to C-sections. Both of my grandmothers also had to have C-sections, but of course my OB said I could go either way.

What has your mom told you?

Re: Your mom's pregnancy

  • My first pregnancy and delivery was very similar to what my mom experienced with me.  I did not love being pregnant, but I had a pretty easy time of it as compared to friends of mine.

The major difference was that my mom used The Bradley Method (I have her books somewhere - so cool) and I knew all along I would get an epi.  I'm not sure if that was common practice in 1977 or why she decided not to have meds, but I think she was a trooper.

Our active labor was almost identical in time.  We were both admitted to the hospital early evening and delivered around 2 am.  Weird.

  • My mom gained about 40-50 lbs with all of her pregnancies...she's  a lot shorter then me and dealt with my Italian grandmother who force fed her :)

She was in labor with her 1st for 16 hrs and with me and my sister her labor was VERY fast (Me-10 min..sister 30 min)  My sister had my niece (her first) very fast too...so I'm hoping that carries over :)

  • My mom doesn't want to go into details for some reason (maybe she doesn't want me to freak). She had a relatively easy PG with my older brother, but she had terrible morning sickness with me. She also said I stretched all over the place in her belly and she couldn't breathe that well half of the time. She had to use a girdle after she had me b/c her insides were all over the place.

She carried both of us high up (she looked like she had a beach ball for a belly), but didn't look PG from the back. My mom delivered both of us naturally and when she went into labor with me, it went fairly quickly, but she was more prepared this time.

She was in fantastic shape and always did yoga before and after both of us were born. It took her roughly 9 months to get her pre-baby body back using yoga, but that was in the days before it was mainstream.

Oooh you're lucky if it's hereditary! My mom labored for a long time with me before ending up having a C-section anyway. That to me is so annoying, if you have to get a C-section, you should at least get out of a long labor!

  • My mom had 3 miscarriages plus 1 ectopic pregnancy before she got sticky babies with my and my sister (identical twins). She was a little bit of an emotional wreck about keeping the baby that she ate everything in sight so that she would start to "show" earlier. My mom who was about a size 6 at the time topped out at over 200 lbs by the time my sister and I were born, and we were 11 lbs between the two of us. So that is one little detail of her pregnancy that I have no intention of repeating. She said she had no morning sickness (neither have I) or stretch marks in spite of all the weight gain, so fingers crossed for both of those.

Other than that I know that her water broke the day after the appointment where they told her that we were fully developed and could come any time with no problems. Her water broke during the closing credits of her favorite soap opera (which she always thought was very polite of us) and she delivered my sister and I by C-section.

  • My mother is a genetic anomaly!!! She is 5'4 and was a body builder when she got pregnant. She weighed 92lbs. She gained 30 lbs with me and ate anything she wanted. I remember when she was pregnant with my sister and brother she would eat 3 cans of black eyed peas and about half a jar of mayo, but I was also born 11.4 and was 24 inches long! She did natural birth and doesn't have a single stretch mark!

Considering I definitely take after my father (I'm 6'1 and 180lbs I have stretch marks on my thighs from growing 4 inches in 3 months when I was 15) I don't think I'll be that lucky.

  • Plenty,

Hard time getting pregnant, hard time staying that way.  Several 1T m/c's, incompetent cervix, lost one at 6 months, came very close to losing me as well.  Non-stop severe m/s, my mom ended up taking some sort of medication that was pulled from the market a few years later.  And the adoption process they were going through was completely FUBAR if you didn't have the $$$$$$$$$ to burn.  I was there last chance kid before they threw the towel in for any kids whatsoever.

Is it any wonder why I'm still rather guarded about being pg?  Long before BFP's were even on the radar, pregnancy never was "easy breezy".

Oh yeah, and seems by having my I made my mom's whole reproductive system a hot mess.  According to the surgeon that did the hysterectomy and other suspension procedures on her, it was all my fault ;)

I agree with you on that one!

My sister also gained a lot of weight but she's also a lot shorter then me too and she ate EVERYTHING, she's now wishing she didn't b/c she's having such a hard time loosing it.  My niece was born 7 weeks early so I'm hoping that doesn't happen with me

  • so far my pregnancy experience is like my mom's she wasnt real nausious except certain smells that set her off bad.. same here

my mom and i hae a similar body shape (darned near I dentical actually LOL) so I am expecing to carry like her.?

the amazing thing si to think that my mom never evenha an US (28 years ago) and i'll have tons of them. my mom had seen her doc 5 times before labor, I'll see mine weekly (high risk)?

my mom always likes to remind me that i was 8 pounds 24 inches long at birth!! i broke 3 of her ribs in the last month while kicking!! my feet and elgs were actually bent from being squeezed in there. she points to my height and my husbands height and say "get ready to not breath for a month!" then she laughs and points to both our big heads and broad sholders and says"paybacks are hell" LOL ah a mother's love. I'm hoping to not have so big a baby though, being diabetic anything over the 7s and the doc will threaten to C section.

I hope to have my mom's labor experience. She was concerned because she had narrow hips.. but when time came her pelvis parted like the red sea!(I'm worried about that too because my hipsare very narrow and never turned out the way most girls do in puberty) LOL She stayed home and got a shower til her water broke, went to the hospital and was talking with her friends at the nursing station(my mom was a respratory therapy nurse so she knew them) and said "call my doc for me I feel like i'm ready to push" then went to lay down.. when the doc came he told the nurses "you're lucky this baby didnt fall out on the floor!" aparantly he reached to check how dialated she was and couldnt cause my head was there ?LOL mom pushed once in the room and they told her to stop, because back in the day they moved you to a "delivery room" she was MAD (and my mom is not a quiet woman when she's happy let alone when she's mad LOL) one more push and there I was.

now the rest of the story was hard. I spent more of the first three years of my life in hospitals than any mother shoudl ahve to deal with.. but i'm here today healthy and strong and hoping to make my own healthy addition to the family tree :) I dont mind following in my mother's footsteps, she is a great mom. I already know i sound like her and look like her a little more each day, may aswell push out my own big headed hard headed baby too LOL

  • While still very important I think it can be less about how well you take care of yourself and more about genetics and body structure when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth.

My mom had 5 healthy children, all vaginal delivery's with no complications during her pregnancies. She ate a fairly healthy diet I believe during her pregnancies as she normally does, However, she smoked cigarettes and drank coffee throughout all of her pregnancies. Nice huh. She was an RN too.

Some women's bodies are just better built to concieve and bear children and it has nothing to do with how well they care for their bodies. There are trade off's in everything in life. We all have advantages and disadvantages. Its just how they are distributed amongst us. There are many things that I don't have (personality characteristics, intelligence) :)  that other people do and vice versa.

That said because my mother never had any miscarriages and neither one of my sister's had one I never expected to have one either. I did however at 5 weeks during my last pregnancy. I am hoping for an uneventful pregnancy this time and natural delivery.

  • With my Mom's pregnancy with me she was on strict bedrest for the last 2 months due to bleeding (placenta previa I think) she didn't have any problems with her 3 pregnancies after that. She delivered all of her children with no pain meds and had pretty fast labors.

I had GD and high blood pressure which my Mom didn't have and I was induced and got an epi. But my actual time in active labor was very close to my Mom's.

My mom weighed 10 + lbs less than I do right now when she was full term PG with me. Indifferent

  • My mom had nothing but problems. She had 4 pregnancies but only 2 of us lived, me and my little brother.  The first two she went into labor two months early for no apparent reason that they could ever find and they were not able to stop it.  Both babies lived 2 days, weighed 2 lbs, and their feet were about the size of your pinky finger.  She was put on bed rest for the full 9 months with me and given steroids to help develop my lungs and brain and everything so that if she went into labor early, I would be more developed.  I was born 3 weeks early and weighed 5lbs.  She was put on bed rest with my brother for 7 months and given steroids again- she went into labor 2 weeks early with him, but he was a normal length and weight.  They still have no idea why she went into labor early.

I'm not worrying about it because they have no idea why she went into labor early, and most of that stuff isn't hereditary.  Also, NICU has advanced so much since the early 80's.

My mom is freaking because I am going with a birthing center and midwife (provided I don't have twins) instead of an OB and hospital.  I keep telling her that its not hereditary and there is no way for them to be able to tell if I am going to go into labor early.  I think it reassures her though, because she knows I research so much and don't make an un-informed decision just because I want a natural birth or something.

I am actually extremely worried about loss in any form, almost more for my mother's sake than mine.  Although I can't imagine how difficult it is, we are strong and we get through it.  I don't know how my mom would get through the loss of a grandchild after she lost 2 of her own babies.  She still can't talk about them.

  • My mom tells my birth story all the time. Not that she ate healthy or had planned for me etc. I'll give the full version - it's too classic to edit. Here goes -

I was conceived on a bean bag chair. My unmarried mother (dating my father at the time) realized she was pregnant a week later. She and dad (after a few weeks of fighting/not talking etc) etc, decide to get married in a shotgun wedding. She drank the entire time. Didn't gain more than 20 pounds. I was breached, with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck (so they already knew she was going to have a CS). Three weeks before I was due, while she was sititng on my godmothers couch having a glass of wine, her water broke - because I kicked it. She was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, while they took off her nail polish (she knew everyone casue she was a nurse). I was in distress - they did the c-section and had to cut all the way across her stomach because I was all wrapped up in the umbilical cord.  I was 5 pounds 10 ounces - and very glad I don't have FAS.

  • Both my brother and I were about 2 weeks late.  My mother's labors were over 24 hours and she never dilated past 3cm and had 2 C-Sections.  She was terribly sick with me and extremely tired with my brother.

My first pregnancy I was only nauseous occasionally.  I was in labor for almost 21 hours.  I dilated to 8cm but DS's heartbeat dropped and I needed an immediate C-Section.  OB says I'm a good canidate for a VBAC though!

My mother was also like 97 lbs when she got pregnant.  I.......was not....... Confused

My OB said that you should definitely consider your own mother's pregnancies but also to remember that your dad's side of the family has influence as well.

My mom had 2 really different pregnancies with me and my sister.  With me, she had a ton of spotting, gained almost 40 pounds, carried high and had no morning sickness.  With my sister she threw up every single day until her 3rd trimester, gained about 25 pounds, no spotting, and carried low.

She thought for sure my sister was going to be a boy!  Also, I was delivered vaginally and my sister was a C-section because her umbillical cord was in knot.

ETA: Also I was 10 days early and my sister was 10 days late.
