Ok, I know that packaged sandwich meats need to be heated up before eating. What about fresh deli meats - like sliced turkey breast? One of my customers just brought us a huge deli meat tray from his restuarant but I don't want to have a sandwich unless I know it is ok. What do you think??
Re: Deli Meats - WDYT?
I never heated deli meat. Gag.

All it takes is one bite of turkey that has listeria bacteria on it and bye bye baby!
Granted, the odds of it being tainted are one in a million, so you have to decide for yourself if it's worth it.
I eat deli meats too. And soft cheeses. The risk of listeria is so small that I am not going to worry about it.
Not sure why people are saying they eat it "in moderation." It's not one of those things like mercury where too much is a problem. It's one of those things that carries a (small) risk each time you do it.

You are ridiculous!!! Dont' scare her, let her eat the sandwich! You just stated that the odds are 1 in a million, do you realize how many other things that could happen that have way worse odds!
A-freaking-men. How stupid.
I also vote in favor of the sammich... there is a reason why you want it.
I ate deli meat everyday with DS (I didn't know about listeria). Not a problem. Like people said, the chances are very very tiny that something could happen.
That being said now that I know about it, I have chosen not to eat it this time around. My thinking is, I am going without caffeiene, fake sugars, and other things, I can go without deli meat sandwiches. I don't want to even take a risk with anything that I am aware of.
way to be a b!tch.
do you eat sandwiches even if you're not pregnant?? because your chances of getting it then are just as slim to none as they are now when you are pregnant. seriously, grow up.
The Nutty Life
Not true. Pregnant women are 20 times more likely to contract listeriosis than the rest of the population, and they account for 27% of all cases. It's still extremely rare, but the effects can be nasty.
You don't need to heat up deli meats. My doc said I can eat all deli meats as long as they're from a reputable place like and not from some random street vendor.
To kill germs anyway, you have to heat food up typically above 140 degrees - which is pretty hot. I can't imagine eating heated deli meats. That's gotta be totally gross.
