Costco vs Sam's Club

We currently have sams club, and I'm frustrated because they are usually out of stock with items we need or they don't carry what we need.  A lot of moms in our moms group recommend costco over sams club, just seeing what people in general think!

Do you think costco is more expensive?

TIA!

Re: Costco vs Sam's Club

  • I can't tell you about prices at Sam's and how they compare....but I just love Costco. They have everything, and the deals seem great. From what I see, they also have a really return policy.

  • I just recently switched from Sam's to Costco.  Mainly because renewal was coming up and there is a 2+ year MAJOR construction project on route to Sam's that I didn't want to deal with and they just built a brand new Costco super close to my house.

The only thing I miss about Sam's club is finding some of the more "name brand" items.  Costco mostly carry's their Kirkland brand.

Also Costco doesn't carry Pampers (just FYI)

  • I prefer Sam's Club to Costco, although there are some things I have found that I like at Costco that Sam's doesn't offer.   The Sam's seems to have better deals by us, but I don't know if that is true of all items or just the few I prefer to purchase.

  • I prefer Costco, their inventory is higher end.  However, if we had a Sam's close (like within an hour and a half) I would have memberships at both.  Sam's carries food in more reasonable quantities, but we make the Costco sizes work for now and we can't beat the quality!
  • We are die-hard Costco shoppers. I prefer not to support Walmart when I can, but I also think the Costco quality is good (even their Kirkland brand) and they carry a lot of high-quality items that I like. We buy all of our meat there, lots of veggies, and countless other products. We're executive members and get 2% back on purchases, so our membership is always free (plus a little extra). Their online selection is great, too, and shipping is very reasonable.

  • Costco carries more organic items although Sams is getting better. Sams is 5 minutes from our house, Costco 30 minutes. We go to Sams for this reason alone.
  • I have never shopped at Sam's but I loooove Costco!
  • We love Sam's - but DH works for Walmart on the Sam's Club side of the company, so we're a little biased.
  • we use to do sam's but switched to costco last fall.   we went last spring for a "preview day" thing at costco--we had to stop at sam's on the way home--did some quick comparison shopping and found that everything we had bought at costco was 50 cents to $1 or a little more cheaper!!!  which in the grand scheme of things makes a good difference.

membership is the same cost $50.  i have found costco to be cleaner, wider isles, the send us coupons!, never seems crowded (where sam's did no matter when you went).

  • Costco things i really like:

    Hamburger 5lbs for $12!    last time i went there was a coupon for kirkland wipes ($4 off-limit 2) I got 1800 wipes for under $30!!! :)

just some of the things i like about them

  • Wanted to add - Sam's loads coupons directly to your card.  You can check your coupons online or when you get in the store.  My two favorites are when they add $2 off chicken or ground beef.  Last weekend I got nearly 6lbs of chicen breasts for about $10.

  • Thanks for everyone's reply.  I think we are switching to Costco this weekend.  We have some of the same thoughts that you guys clarified.

just a FYI. If you are not happy with either club, you can return your membership at anytime. During college I worked at the membership counter at Sam's. We also returned out costco membership. The 3 by our house have awful lines. Even if they had better deals it isn't worth waiting 30+ minutes in line. For what we buy Sam's has better deals, better location, and a gas station that is always atleast 5 cents cheaper.

Haha ditto. We have some Costcos about an hour away and before I was with DH I shopped there a lot with my roommate because she had a membership (and I was a mooch haha) and I thought some of the prices were a little much. They also, as another PP said, didn't carry a lot of brand name items, mostly just their own brand. That's also why I like Sam's.
