Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Do you have travel questions?

I work for the Dept of Homeland Security and I fly a ton. With the summer travel season coming up I thought I'd answer your questions if you have them about flying and making it through security smoothly with your babies.

Ask away. :-)

  • I got one.  My son is on SImalec Neosure because he was a premie and specifcly ready to feed formula.  We were considering visiting family oversears and were wondering if we'd be able to take formula over with us...it is a long flight and he would have to eat.  But he has a perscription for the ready to feed neosure from his pediatrician because he had bad reflux when he gave him powdered formula.  At this point we figured we'd just wait till he was off formula so we wouldnt have to deal with security issues.  But I was just wondering anyway.

  • Baby food, formula (both liquid and powder), water to make baby bottles, meds for baby (both Rx and OTC) are allowed in your carry on. Ice packs as well are acceptable. You may bring water for your child. The amount has to be comparative to where you are going and if you have a layover. Your liquids will be tested by the screeners but you should have no problems getting through the checkpoint.
  • Ready to feed is certainly ok to bring. Bring the Rx so there is no confusion going through security. They will do a test on your formula and you'll be good to go.

  • Or just put it in a ziploc, take it out of your bag and place it in the container, send it through the xray and they will test it. That way they don't have to go digging through your diaper bag...you'll get through the line faster.
  • I am thinking about using the powder packets (4 oz) instead of bringing a container. I am wondering if this is okay because I don't get how they will be able to check the powder.
  • I have another food question, sorry! We're going to be flying for 13 hours so I'll need to bring a lot of formula. I wanted to bring the 8 oz ready to drink formula bottles but if they open them to test them they have to be used within an hour. Do I just have to bring the powder formula? Also, the same goes with the jarred baby food, if they open the jars to test them, they are supposed to be used within an hour, how does that work?
  • You can bring as much powder formula as you want. The restrictions are on liquids. But water or liquid formula for babies is considered exempt from the ban bc it's a necessity for the baby. That being said, you can't bring gallons of water and expect to get through with no problem. It has to be a reasonable amount based on your flying and layover time.
  • Unopened food and formula will be tested but they will not open the jars/bottles. So you don't have to worry about it spoiling.
