water birth moms - a ? about apparel...

what did you wear on top when you were in the birth pool? a swim suit top, a sports bra, nothing? Just realizing I should probably throw something in my bag since we're planning on a water birth but I have no idea which way to go... Either way I'll probably have to go buy something since I don't think I own a sports bra that would fit at this point and I don't have any bathing suits either.

  • not having a water birth but I've always wanted one Stick out tongue

    But my two cents...

If you are comfortable with a bikini usually, I would just get a bathing suit that you can wear after the baby too.

If not I would get a dark/black sports bra and you can wear that later too (could be a nursing one too!)

If it were me, I would feel more comfortable with something over my boobies during the labor/delivery process.  I don't know why but showing just my boobs doesn't bother me and just showing my bottom half while laboring/delivery doesn't bother me, but both at the same time makes me uncomfortable.  lol

  • I was completely naked for most of my labor with Bruce...I took off my gown to shower and once that was done they kept trying to get me to put it back on and I had no desire. I'm thinking in the water I might want something, though? I don't know.... I want to be able to do skin to skin right away so something with a lot of coverage doesn't seem a good idea. Maybe a sleep bra or a tube top type thing? I wonder if I could use my bella band....
  • I didn't get to actually have the waterbirth due to some unforseen complications BUT I did labor in the water for about 6 hours ... I was naked.  I thought, before I was in the moment, I would wear my bra while in the water but, frankly, I wanted nothing to do with anything covering me for my entire labor!  It was like any contact with fabric caused me so much irritation and I just coudn't handle it.  In the end, I didn't give a flying fig if people saw me naked and I also realized that the nurses/my midwife were probably pretty darn used to seeing naked, laboring women.  :-)
  • DD wasn't born in the tub, but I was in there up until the last minute (I got crazy hot). I was totally butt-ass naked. I stripped all my clothes off on the way to the shower in early labour, leaving a trail of clothes behind me, and never put anything back on. I didn't really have time to anyway, because my labour was pretty quick and went from easy to intense in about 5 minutes.
  • for eloise's water birth, i wore a sports bra and boy shorts-type underwear until i was 8cm and lost the undies.  i kept the bra on the whole time.

i was completely naked in the bed when i birthed marlee.

  • I had on a nursing tank.

As soon as I got to the birthing center I stripped naked and got in the tub.  I had some rough back labor and it felt best to drape myself over the side of the tub - I remember it being uncomfortable for my (giant) breasts to be hanging like that.  So I put on a tank.  It was white.  The photos are klassy Stick out tongue

  • I used a grey sports bra with my first water birth, a black one for my second, and a grey and lime one with my third. I felt so much more comfortable in a sports bra. I had to buy the biggest size though even though I was only a 38D. Another option if you are bigger chested is to get a wire free nursing bra in a darker color so you don't feel like you are in a wet t-shirt contest Smile

  • I got a 2 pack of crappy sports bras at Target today for $8... I considered getting the black/white pack and I got the white/pink pack. Should I reconsider that move and get the black? They also only had up to a 38, no 40's.... I think I'll only need the 38 since that is what I'm wearing now and hopefully I won't get that much bigger before she is born. I was just thinking I'd want it roomy and not tight so I could pull it down easily to do skin to skin. Maybe I'll see if I can find a way to try them on without unhooking them from each other and whatnot.
  • Personally I would get the darker ones but it's really about what you are comfortable in.
