M is into throwing these huge fits all of the sudden when she doesn't get her way or even when we change her diaper. I am talking kicking, screaming, flailing arms, and she even hit me once. Honestly, I am not sure what I am supposed to do. She is too young for time out and I really don't think spanking is the way to go because I don't think she will understand why I am hitting her. What would you/ do you do?
Re: What do you do when your 11 month old throws fits?!?
Please, please please don't hit her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At this point the best thing to do is sternly tell her something along the lines of "Ouch, you're hurting mommy!" and then basically just firmly hold her with one hand while you change her diaper with the other hand.
"When she doesn't get her way" just try to redirect her to something she does want.
this. if he bites or hits, before i redirect i say "we don't bite/hit mommy, it hurts." or if he's getting into something he shouldnt, i say "not for baby" and the redirect.
DD - February 2011
I get the serious mom face/voice and pretty much ignore it. DD threw herself on the floor for the first time today.. Little stinker! She just wants my attention and she needs to know that throwing a fit isn't the way to go about getting it. For example, she tries to get into the drawers that have drawer locks and gets stuck and starts fussing. I take her arm out and tell her she's not supposed to be in there (or something to that effect) and she will usually get angry. I just ignore it and she will realize she's throwing a fit for nothing and move on. I worked with toddlers for a long time so I am no stranger to the tantrum, haha.
From what I've read, the best thing to do at this age is to ignore it. Any reaction from you is a good thing to them.
DD throws a fit sometimes when I'm changing her diaper, but if I give her a toy she usually calms down.
If it's about wanting something that is dangerous to her, I tell her no, take it away, and give her something she can have.
I just kind of stand there and look at him...eventually he realizes that the whining fit isn't getting him anywhere and he stops. Occasionally he gets even madder at me and I just look at him and say something like, "That's life, buddy, you can't always get what you want."
He gets over whatever it is eventually.
