Does anyone have a "mother's helper"?

I'm thinking of hiring a mother's helper/babysitter type person this summer after I have the baby so I can sleep in a few mornings a week. If you have or have had this type of babysitter, what did you ask her to do? How did you find them? Was it hard to find someone to work only a few hours a week?

Side note: do you think you would feel weird having someone else in the house watch your kids while you slept? In theory, it sounds great but I don't know how it would be in practice.

TIA!

  • I dont know, you could probibly find a high school/college age girl

    I reccomend care.com

  • I had one in the beginning when DS was born, and I plan on having one again after this baby... they only came on certain days, and it was someone that i trusted so I had no problem sleeping with them here, also I mostly had mine to entertain my 5 year old while I slept with the baby, this time around my 5 year old will be in school all day and they will be looking after the 15month old while I sleep with the baby,

I went with one also because we are so FAR away from family, and my husband travels for work so I'm lucky if he is home one day a week so I didn't have a break, and the mommy helper gave me a break and some time to get into a routine and be comfortable..

  • Yes I have a part time mother's helper who is here 15 hours a week.  I also started with a night doula months 2 and 3.  My mother's helper started after month 3. I hired the doula through another twin mommy recommendation and I hired the mother's helper through gonannies.com.  I thought it was going to be weird at first having someone here that I'm paying, but if you are comfortable with who you hire, you'll end up getting that sleep you need!!My helper I specifically wanted someone who was willing to cook, clean and do laundry if I wanted to be the one with the babies.  I was also very clear about how much I wanted to pay.  It was not hard to find someone, I still get emails through that site of people interested in the position. What worked for me was to have a "working" interview.  We both took take of the babies and I watched and also showed her how I liked things to be done.  The first time I went and took a nap, I left the door a little open so I could hear what was going on knowing I could get out of bed if things weren't going well.  It took a couple of times to really sleep well, but I did! My helper is so great I basically leave the house every time she is here, so she is more like a nanny, but I make sure all the bottles are done, help with bathtime, bedtime etc., she is not completely on her own the whole time.PM me if you have more questions. • I'm considering doing this when I have #2 since I will most likely be recovering from another c-section and my first recovery was hard and long.

    A site I've checked out is sittercity.com.

  • My friend runs a company that provides this service.  She says business is doing really well.  I'm considering hiring one a couple days a week when the baby is born.  Her website is www.stressedmama.com
  • I do.  I hired her after my husband used up his leave (3 weeks).  We have a VERY VERY VERY active toddler (he was 21 months at the time) and I had just had our DD.  Second c-section.  I knew there would be trouble (see active toddler description above) every time I sat down to pump (she couldn't latch on).  DD is now 4 months and while I could live without mother's helper now, I LOVE her.

I found her on CL and just advertised for a babysitter and explained sometimes I would be home, sometimes not.
