Hi!
We're getting ready to PCS, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks to share? Its been 3 years since our last pcs, and our first w/ a kiddo, so I'm feeling more overwhelmed and less organized than usual. I've looked at all the checklists available online, but I'm sure you ladies have some great tricks up your sleeves! If you don't have any tips, is there anything you'd do differently on your next pcs than what you did the last time?
Re: PCS Tips & Tricks?
Slip copies of orders/or a pre-printed slip of paper with your name, rank, new address, and phone number in the boxes, but especially in those boxes with family heirlooms and such, that way if it happens to get separated from your stuff you stand a better chance at getting it back.
If you can, have at least three other adults with you on the receiving end. Two to check boxes in, and one to start unpacking fragile and/or more valuable items that you don't want the movers to unpack, and one to direct the movers as to what goes where.
There is no such thing as too much help.

I had to confirm my china value before they came. I had to write down the descriptions, any serial numbers and estimated value and I went one step further and took pictures of everything. Luckily, none of my china was broken!
also, they say not to worry about providing refreshments or tipping your movers..but we had coffee and donuts and other snacks for them and had a great moving team that volunteered to be the team that unloaded the truck at our new location! I am all about bribery.
Our movers were pissed that I didn't have a cooler of cold drinks for them and then pretty much told me I needed to order food for them for dinner. No one told me that it's generally a good idea to provide food and drinks for movers (I assumed they brought their own, but I guess not), so that's something you might want to consider.
I was told that they won't pack candles, but they packed my sister's during her last move.
Take pictures of everything.
1) Pictures of everything and include the serial numbers. Keep the list electronically but also print the list out to have on hand on the day of packing. That way the shippers "know" that you are on the ball.
2) Take at least two pictures (front and back) of each item. We actually had to fight over a major scratch on the back of an antique mirror once.
3) Box in the car - kitchen items: spatula; cutting knife; large serving spoon; one pot; pan, paper plates/napkins/cups, coffee pot (seriously!), multi-purpose cleaniner, paper towels and a spounge, coffee, filters, sugar and powder creamer if you use it, toilet paper, shampoo, body soap, toothpaste, pet supplies, garbage bags.
4) Box in the car - electronics - remotes (we tried taping them to the item; but the movers actually removed the remotes and bundled them together....and lost one), all of your paperwork including IDs, Orders, Passports; any cords you REALLY need for the computer.
5) I moved all of the pictures and tchotcke to one room before the movers arrived. This way they were all packed together, not in the rooms that they came from. It makes it easier to put that stuff in a corner until you get everything else in order.
Even if you are frustrated, be sweet on the phone with transportation, moving co, housing. It always gets me somewhere.
Also have something for your kiddos to do during the packing if you have them at home. Coloring books, portable dvd player on the floor, etc.
