PR: Do drs usually know the sex if you didn't find out?

Today at my dr. appt., the dr. referred to the baby as "she" twice. We didn't find out what we're having. I said, "'She'?!? Do you know something I don't know?!" and he said 'no' and just brushed it off as an insignificant slip of the tongue. I'm assuming that's the case, b/c my DD was in the room and maybe we'd just been talking about when I was pregnant with "her". However, does anyone know if it IS common practice to write the sex on the chart during an ultrasound, whether or not the parents want to find out?

I did quickly skim over my chart when he left the room, but didn't see anything noticable to my untrained eye. However, he came in the room knowing it was my birthday today, so I know he was looking at my info before he came in.

I'm sure I'm totally overthinking this.... but now if it IS a girl, I know I'll always wonder....

ETA: Just to clarify, this dr. never did an ultrasound on me. Only the ultrasound tech did. I'm just specifically wondering if they record that info anywhere, even when parents didn't request it.

  • I'm sure they have been given that info but they might not remember. My doctor never mentioned the sex to me even after I found out. I'm inclined to think he was just saying "her" instead of "it."

  • At my practice the ultrasound tech does not write the sex in your chart if you did not want to know. That way the midwives/ doctors wouldn't "slip up" and give it away. It was probably nothing!

  • My MW warned me before my ultrasound that if we decided not to find out then, it wouldn't be in our chart to find out later.

I think a lot of people just use gender-specific terms to avoid saying "it" when talking about a baby whose sex is unknown. My MW called LO "him" or "her" more than once before we even had our u/s.

  • No, most Drs dont know if you dont find out. The U/S tech wont usually put that info in the report unless you ask for it, and that's the only way a dr knows. And drs have so many patients that they often just use one pronoun for all babies if they dont know.

No, I don't think they do since most often during the ultrasound you have to do extra shots to find out the sex.  It wouldn't be in the techs report if you didn't ask for it.  I didn't find out the sex with my last pregnancy and it was no where in my file.

Same for us.  The ultrasound tech looked but did not put it down in our chart because we didn't want to know.

  • My doctor said they don't know if the parent's don't know.  That way no slip ups are possible.
  • My dr. asked me if we knew because she said she didn't, so my guess would be that it's NOT in the chart at my practice.

  • Not in my OB's practice. Unless you find out at the 20-wk u/s, you wouldn't be able to find out because they do not mark gender on the chart.

My OB used to change up the pronoun depending on the day. I wouldn't read into it too much.

  • At my practice they write it down in your chart regardless of if you know the sex.  The Dr. walked into my appointment and said "Oh you found out you are having a ...... oh wait, did you want to know the sex?"  Yes we did find out the sex but he was very close to spilling the beans.  He said he did it before with other patients.  And my ultrasound was done by an ultrasound tech, in case that matters.
  • My Dr always refers to the baby as a "she", even when it is way too early to know. I think it is nicer than saying "it".

My doctor never knows if his patients don't want to know.  He just always referred to her as "baby." We didn't find out the gender, but the u/s tech said "he" a couple of times, when I questioned her, she said that's the pronoun she always uses.  Obviously, that's the case, because I have a daughter!

  • My dr asked me if I knew what I was having and then wrote it on the chart.  It wasn't even on there.  He had no clue until I told him.
  • My Dr's office doesn't put it in regardless.  I even asked when we found out we were having DD
  • My OB was annoyed that it was in my chart. Made it hard for her to not slip-up. So it very well could be there.

Mine was like most of the pp - it wasn't in my chart until I told the doctor the sex and he wrote it down.
  • I wondered the same thing because at 2 appts my doc referred to baby as "him"...but only once at each appt.  So at my last appt I asked the nurse if it says it in my chart and she said no.  I then asked if the u/s report said it and she said no.  So, I am hoping he doesn't really know...but I feel like if he did know at some point he doesn't remember...we found out with DS and he could never remember at the appt what DS was....

  • I guess I never really thought about it, but in retrospect, it must not be written down in the file.  I see a different OB almost everytime I'm there (big practice) and he/she always asks me if I know what I'm having...

  • I believe they do look. Our ultrasound tech told us she refers to them all as 'he'. She told us this before they started so we wouldn't be surprised if she said something.

  • No, they don't add the sex as part of the information.
  • I do billing for a ultrasound company and the sex of the baby is marked on the report as it is one part that they still check for development. At our office, they put a warning on the chart that says parents do not want to know the sex so that no one slips and tells them.
  • My doctor didn't know. She would always refer to the baby as "she" since she has a daughter.

  • My OB asked me if I knew, then wroteit down.  It's not in my chart before that.
  • I didn't find out with my first.  We moved while I was pregnant with my 2nd and I took my records to my new OB.  I read them from my first pregnancy and it said in my files from the u/s that we were having a boy.  So, yes, my Dr. knew.
