3rd Trimester

Positive for Group B Streptococcus

So I tested positive in a recent urine sample for Group B Streptococcus. So I will not have the culture done at 37 weeks. I am taking oral ampicillin for five days now and then during labor and delivery I will receive ampicillin through an IV. The main concern is me passing it to LO during birth.

Has anyone else had experience with this? My OB said not to worry since we are aware of it now. But I always scare myself by ?researching? online which I can be dangerous but I like to be informed.

Re: Positive for Group B Streptococcus

  • I got swab tested last week and find out this afternoon my results.  My sister tested positive and just had to get iv antibiotics before the baby came.

I don't have any experience with it but I do know that as long as they give you antibiotics in the hospital your baby will be safe.  Your doctor is right, don't worry about it.

  • GBS pneumonia in newborns is really scary, but it seems like you are being thoroughly pre-treated.  I wouldn't worry one bit!  I'm sure your LO will be perfect.
  • My OB and our childbirth class instructor said about 30-40% of normal, healthy adults carry it in their bodies and test positive, and it isn't a big deal at all. It just means some extra antibiotics to keep from passing it to the baby. Don't stress too much about it! I know lots of people that tested positive during the swab test.

  • I tested positive for GBS as well.  My Dr. said it is nothing as long as I get the IV of meds.

As long as you're getting the antibiotics, which you are, you have nothing to worry about.

I tested positive also. I'm not worried sense we found out about it ahead of time and my dr will be giving me antibiotics. My dr also said I would be staying a mandatory 48 hours in the hospital after I gave birth to monitor LO and make sure everything is perfect with her.

I tested postitive for this with my last pregnancy and when I arrived at the hospital for delivery...the contractions happened so fast that I had forgotten to tell the nurses to give me anitibiotics!  When I remembered about it, I was ready to push and it was too late.  Anyways, I delivered DD w/o getting the antibiotics and DD came out fine.
  • I google things too and scare the poop out of myself :0( I have not been tested yet, but my doctor said it's super common to test positive. And as long as you get the anti-biotics while you're in labor everything will be A-okay :0)

  • I tested positive with DS and with this baby. Antibiotics during labor for DS and will do the same with this baby.

I wonder why you're on antibiotics now though?  I've never heard of that.
