Emerson as a girls name?

I love the name emerson for a girl and she could go by emmy for short.

But I have heard it should be a boys name.

Any suggestions of similar names or do you like this name.

Re: Emerson as a girls name?

  • Not crazy about many names with the -son ending for a girl.

If you are going for calling her Emmy for short some names that could work are: Emery, Emily, Emma, Emeline or even Emelia.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • Emerson is making a strong showing on these boards, and I think it will eventually wear us down, but for now, I don't care for it as a girl's name. I agree with the pp who said 'son' in a girls name. I mean, the definition is "son of ______".

  • It's my niece's name. That being said, I love my niece, but not her name. I find it too masculine for a little girl. Perhaps she will grow into it.

I like the name Emerson, but not necessarily as a girl's name. I have seen it being used more and more (especially on these boards) as a girl's name though.

  • Love the name for a Girl!  I tend to like the unisex names for girls though.  My three year old is Camrynn, which is often used for boys.

Love it! It's actually on our list.
  • I like it for a girl- esp. nn Emmy. I like more formal given names with more cutesy nns- like Emerson and Emmy!

I think Emerson is a very pretty name, actually.

The -son thing never bothered me (probably, as I said in another post, because I am an Allison and I love my name).

  • I have posted this name and seen it posted tons lately! We ditched the name after saying it out loud a lot. It's pretty, but we decided against, and I'm glad we did because it seems that it is becoming one of the trendy names :(

Whoa. your name is Emily and you are naming your daughter Emerson? That would be too similar for me.

  • Love it.

It was actually my first pick but DH said we weren't naming our child after an appliance manufacturer. So, we went with Addison. I have no issue with the fact that DD's name means, "Son of Adam".

  • I think it is really pretty, especially if you give her a very feminine mn.
  • I think it's absolutely awful. Terrible for a girl, but not good for a boy either. I think if you picture someone meeting your child for the first time, not knowing his/her gender, when they heard the name Emerson and image would come to mind and it certainly wont be one of a pretty little girl.
