What do you consider a "big baby" to be/weigh?

I read on here a lot that people think they are having a "big baby" based on u/s growth checks and are getting induced for an 8 1/2lb baby. A lot of times I think I must be the only one that thinks that an 8+lb baby is not big. I always thought that 7-8lb range (meaning all of the 7lb range and all of the 8lb range) was normal and that once you are in the 9lb range you could start thinking baby was bigger (but not huge by any means).

Maybe this has to do with the fact that my DH's family has a lot of "huge" babies (in the 10lb range) and the women all push them out and it's not a huuuuge deal to us to hear that. My DD1 was born at 8lbs even and I thought she was just perfect in size - right in the average range.

What do you consider a "big baby" to be??? Is the average weight of a baby lower than what I think and now people are considering an 8lb-er big??

Just curious!

  • My mom thought I was "huge", I came a week late and was 9lbs 11oz... close to 10lbs!

I'm expecting mine to be big, only because of GD.

  • I would consider a big baby to be 9+ pounds.

  • Nowadays- I consider anything over 8.5 lb big because it seems like so many people are eager (induce, walk, sex, whatever else) to have baby once they hit 38 weeks and thus have more 6-7 lbers. Is this then brining down the percentile? DD was 8.4 and I thought she was in the 90% for weight.

DH and his siblings were all around 10 lbs and them are some big babies!

  • i'm with you...over 9 pounds...that being said, I'd love a 7 pounder :)  lol!  (DH and I were both mid 8's)
  • anything 8lbs and over...but that it only because we had and want to have another totally natural delivery and it freaks me out to have a "big" baby...
  • I'm with you. I just thought babies were in the 8s and that was average. My mom had four of us, we were all 8.5-9 (two boys, two girls) and Dh was high 8s. So for me, big starts around 9.5. My cousin just had a 5.15 baby and my mom acts like it is premature :-) Though I'd prefer to push out something in the 8range, opposed to the 9s!

  • Healthy baby: 7-9 lbs, big baby: 9-10 lbs, huge baby: 10+. I'm hoping for a healthy 7-9.5 pounder. :)
  • I think 8lbs+ is a bigger baby- 9lbs+ is a BIG baby!  7lb-ers are more normal in my family, but I'm a first timer so maybe my view will be different after I squeeze this guy out :)

25 years ago the average baby was 6-7lbs.  Now the average is around 8ish.  The main reason for this is maternal weight gain & diet (not in all cases obviously).  So for a lot of women 8 lbs is a big baby because they hear from their older female relatives that it is, when in reality it's the new normal.

  • I think it depends on the size of the mother. I always considered 9lbs.+ a big baby... but my DS was 7 lbs. 14 oz., 22 in. long and my doctor said for me that was a very big baby. I'm 5'3" and tiny. I pushed for 5 hours and almost had to have a c-section because the doctors didn't think there was any way I was going to get that "large" of a baby out vaginally. Fortunately I did!

This. Average to me is 6 to 9 lbs, although I do think that a 9 lb baby is "big" for a petite person to deliver.

  • I'd say 9.5+ is a big baby.  I'm expecting a tall, but average weight baby (likely 21-22" and 7-8 lbs).

I think anything over 8lbs is a big baby and anything over 9lbs is a huge baby. This is probably because I'm South American and from what I've heard, South American babies tend to be smaller than North American babies. My doctor is Asian and she also mentioned that the standard here is way higher than in Asia. She said Asian babies average 6lbs.

    Big baby: Over 9 pounds

I'm just really surprised that some posters talk about scheduling c-sections because their LO is 'estimated' at 8-9 pounds.   Really?     I had no problem pushing out an 8 pounder (born 2 weeks early).   I'd say that it was *much* easier than I ever imagined.

My brother was 11lb 15oz - and my mom had him vaginally and med-free.   Seriously.

Even though I am measuring 2-3 weeks ahead, I am relieved my OB is not ordering a growth u/s.   I'd rather they not give me one of those stupid estimates (because they are estimates...and a lot of times NOT right at all).   My son will probably be a big/huge baby, and I'd honestly rather not know how big until after I push him out.

  • I think a "big baby" starts around 9 1/2 lbs.  DH's family has a lot of big babies in the 10lb (even 11lb yikes) range and all of them thought my 7lb 8oz DD was tiny... I had a fun time explaining that NO she was not tiny she was average size for a healthy newborn baby.  They all thought average started at the 8 1/2 lb range...  I'm lucky that my family all has little babies so I think that helped to average my babies out.

That's pretty much my scale, too.

  • 10 lbs. and over is big to me.
  • My son was a big baby - 10 lbs 15 oz at 38.5 weeks.

As a general rule I would say anything over 9 lbs is starting to get into the big baby range, however it completely depends on the woman's body type.  Let's face it.  Some of us were built better for this than others.

Your friend may have a 10 baby with no problem and your sister may struggle with a 8 pounder.  It's all relative.

  • my family has a lot of 10 lb babies. So when DS was 8lbs 5 oz I thought he was tiny!

Big to me is 9.5 lbs or up.

  • 9 lb+ is big to me.  I am on track for an 8 lb baby, according to the Dr & growth u/s.  To me that's not big, although it is above average.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • I definitely agree, 7-8 lb babies are average in my book. I think 9lbs+ is a big baby. DH was 10lbs 11 oz!
