3rd Trimester

XP: For those of you with 2 children (stroller ?s)

I am due to have a c-section in 6 weeks with #2 and am starting to think about double strollers. DS will be almost 2-1/2 when DD arrives and I was thinking it might be nice to have a sit and stand stroller since DS is getting more and more independent however still needs some down time when we are out and about. After talking with DH, he thinks a double stroller is unecessary and suggested we get an umbrella stroller and just use our travel system stroller for DD when go on walks, outings, etc because he thinks we will always be together when we do these sort of things. However you never know when I might get the urge to get out by myself with the 2 of them.

Anyhow, I'm just wondering what some of you have done with 2 smaller children in this situation. Also, wearing baby probably won't be an option because 1. I'm not really comfortable with it and 2. DS was a big baby 11 lbs at 38.5 weeks and so he was always too heavy for me to wear and DD is on track to be almost as big as him.

 TIA for your help!

  • We have a double stroller, but baby and DD will only be 20 months apart, so I figured she'd be sitting much more than walking around.  There are some pretty inexpensive sit and stands.  I would get one for days when it's just you with the kiddos.

  • I know you said carrying isn't an option, but is that strictly due to the babys' weight? Only reason I ask is b/c I got the Ergo with my son and started to use it around 4-5 months and it was truly awesome on my back and I didn't feel the weight.

For the stroller, I plan on getting the city mini double, a friend of mine has this with her 3 and 1 year old, she got it when they were infant and 2 and she loves it and said made her life so much easier. I looked at the sit and stands but I didn't like how long they were I saw someone trying to get in a door with it and it was nearly impossible so I got a bit freaked out by it!

  • we have invested in the baby jogger city select for when we have a second child. it's a huge cost upfront to accomodate two kids (we didn't buy the second seat yet) but if you have the means, the baby jogger city mini is a fantastic stroller. if any store has it in your area, definitly check it out!
  • we kind of went through the same thign...DS has not really been a stroller person since he was old enough to realize he was in one. :)  We bought a Bob jogging stroller for him and LOVED it but we didnt want to spend all the $$ on a double BOB since he would probably not want to be in it as much.  So we actually saw a clearance baby trend dbl jogger on sale at BRU and bought that.  We have the umbrella, the single jogger, the travel system etc but at least this way when it is just me we have the double for back up.  Maybe you could find something on Craigslist or something that wouldnt be as much of an expense in case you dont use it??

  • If you haven't already you should try the ergo, it's the best baby carrier ever, it supports the back and is really comfortable.

My DD will be 2 1/2 when this LO gets here and we bought the baby jogger city select stroller, it can be a single stroller or a double stroller and holds the carseat, we plan on having more kids in the future so the price tag wasn't such a big deal. They also have a buggy board you can get that attachs to the back so that the older child can stand up and ride instead of sitting in the seat.

  • I don't have a double stroller, I wore DS when I was out with both of them. What sort of carrier have you tried in the past?  There may be one that would work better, I can still wear DS now and he's over 20 lbs.

  • we got the Baby Jogger City Elite (the City Mini also comes highly recommended) and have the car seat attachment for the stroller.  Super easy to fold and love the way it handles!  DD will be 22 months when DD2 arrives.

DD1 was just over 2 when DD2 was born. I thought about the sit and stand but ended up not getting it. I didn't think I could "trust" dd1 enough to walk or sit nicely in there when she didn't want to walk.

I definitely think a double is a good idea for exactly the reasons you mentioned - you don't like babywearing and what happens if you have both kids by yourself, which is BOUND to happen.

We got a great deal on the phil & teds with doubles attachment. It seemed the best in my mind since it was the size of a single and could be a single or double - great for the times when DD1 is walking, then I'm not hauling around some half empty, huge double stroller.

  • We ended up getting a double jogger from one of DH's friends for very cheap...although it is not what I really wanted....nor have I even seen it yet....but it will work for when I want to get both kiddos out by myself for a walk that is meant to get me exercise.

I am still looking at the sit n stands for shorter trips when something smaller is needed.  The Joovy Ergo Caboose lets you put the infant seat in the back so that the toddler can still have the more comfy front seat.  DS1 is just 2 and he still likes stroller rides, but I don't think he would stay put on the back seat quite yet.

Also another option for the sit n stand is to put baby in front w/o infant seat but  have a carrier along in case toddler decides he really wants to sit inthe front for a nap or something.

We also have an Ergo so it could be used for either kid.  Maybe try one of those, you will find it easier to carry #2 since you are now used to carrying your older heavier tot!

  • We're not there yet, but we got the Sit 'n Stand double (it has a second full-size seat you can put in the back, so it functions as either a double stroller or a sit 'n stand, and can take a car seat in either position).  We've tried it out with just DD, and it's a little heavy/awkward to push, but from the ones we tried no more so than anything else.  We decided to get the one with both seats because although DD generally prefers to walk and I think will like the off/on of the sit 'n stand she still occasionally poops out on long outings/days and needs a place to snooze.

  • We got the Joovy Caboose sit/stand stroller. It comes with an attachment thing for the infant carseat and looks attractive and good price! We registered for it on BRU and the IL's bought.
