Parenting after a Loss

Failure to thrive

Anyone's LO diagnosed with this?? No one has said it to me yet, but I know it's coming since Nicholas gain weight at a ridiculously slow rate and is just barely on the charts for his weight now.

Re: Failure to thrive

  • no.  what does he weigh?

  • Have you asked your Pedi about mixing the formula differently to increase the caloric density?

  • He is 13 lbs 9.5 oz...not even on the charts as far as percentile. He's 3rd percentile for height, so he is small by nature. I haven't talked to him about this yet--I think he wants to do the milk scan first to make sure it is reflux causing the problem before he goes trying other things. Our scan is scheduled for next Thurs.

  • Hmm, not on the chart for weight?  DD is 11lb 14.5oz and is I think 1-3% for weight for her actual age (i believe that is what the doc said on Monday).

Is he gaining weight on his curve?

No, he's dropped off his curve. Boys and girls have different charts/percentiles.

  • My boy is short too.  He is like 25% but I am 4' 11".  He is like 50% weight last I checked.  he is 7 months and 18.4.  He'll catch up!
  • Eliana hasn't been diagnosed w/ this, but I worry about it. She was only 9 lb at her 2 month check up (was 6 lb 12 oz at birth, but got down to 6lb 7 oz before gaining back). I hope your scan goes well!
  • I don't know anything about "failure to thrive" but I can understand why you're worried.  DD was always below the 50th percentile for weight (but was 100 percentile for length).  She was spitting up A TON and everyone just said that's how babies were.  She was consistently dropping in the percentiles and eventually got down to around the 9th.  At that point the pedi increased her reflux meds but that didn't do anything so we started adding rice to her bottle and started her on solids.  I felt much better when she started putting on more weight and she seemed a lot happier too.  Anyway, I really hope they can figure out what's going on with your little guy.  At least he seems to be a happy healthy (and cute!) baby otherwise :)

  • Nothing worse then worrying about this. I know you will have checked this, but his DCP are feeding all his bottles/food right?

I would say he is thriving other than this though right, he is rolling (at least his one way), sitting up, holding his book (loved that pic!) and reaching his other development goals, so doesn't that help balance it out a little?

  • my DD is failure to thrive.  she is barely at the 5th percentile for her adjusted age.  she has horrible reflux though & drinks only about 20 oz of 27 cal formula per day (eats a few oz of food/day too but nothing huge).  does your DS seem to enjoy eating?  is he eating/drinking the correct amount for his age?  are you and/or your DH on the small side?  some babies are just not meant to be huge & fat.  i wouldn't worry about it too much as long as your LO seems to be enjoying eating/drinking & not refusing food.  you can mix your formula to a higher calorie (start at 22 cal & work your way up if you need to-obviously talk to your pedi about this).  good luck & try not to worry too much.
  • forgot to mention: my DD will be 1 in about a week & she weighs 15 pounds (she's 9 months adjusted).  it used to make me insane but it's not like we can force feed them, you know?
  • No diagnosis here, but tomorrow is his 9 mo apt and I plan on pushing it.  He's been roughly 3% the whole time for his actual age and they had explained around 4 months that they wouldn't worry unless the percentile dropped.  We had him in a couple of weeks ago and he was only 15 lbs.  From what I can tell that put him at less than 3% for his actual and adjusted age.  He was sick and not eating well at the time, so hopefully he has had a bit of a rebound.  I hope Nicholas is putting on some weight soon.  I'll let ya know how the convo goes.
  • I hope they can figure out what's going on. GL!
  • DD is actually below the charts for weight, so I hear your concern.  Our doc did not diagnose her with failure to thrive, but he is not a conventional doc and I sort of feel like a conventional doc would have by now.  I don't really know what the benefit of such a diagnosis is.  I mean, you're feeding your baby and some kids are just small.

Are you doing anything to try to make him gain more weight?  I'm just curious because DD has the same issue.
