DS woke up this morning at 6a.m. (two hours earlier than normal) and has been fussing, crying, clawing and kicking at me, and refusing to nap for 17 hours.
No fever, not in any apparent pain. I can distract him for a few minutes but then he goes right back to fussing which quickly turns into crying.
As a precaution, I have an appointment scheduled with his pediatrician but this is the third time this has happened in the past month. Several days of being a little demon with no apparent reason.
I don't know what's wrong with him - I don't really see posts from people on the "Babies" boards describing this type of behavior.
He's gotten so strong that he literally hits, pinches, claws, slaps, etc. and it hurts. I have no idea what I am doing with this kid. I have always met his needs the second they need to be met because I want him to feel secure and happy and he's like a little monster right now.
Ugh. Anyone go through anything, at all, similar to this?
Re: I Feel Like I Just Lost a Battle...
Ok so I know every newborn is different but.......
A. I know there is "supposed" to be something called the 4 month wakeful period (some say this is a myth so who knows) but this may be a thought(you had mentioned him not napping).
B. If I remember correctly I *think* there is supposed to be a growth spurt around 3 months (It's sad my DS is not even 2 yet and I don't really remember. I blame it on the sleep deprivation, ha) so that might explain his moodiness. Does he seem like he wants to eat more? That's also supposed to be a sign.
C. My DS was actually diagnosed with Reflux right around the 3 month mark. He was just fussy a lot more than usual. Does he act this way after he eats??
D. Also, as crazy as it sounds, he could be teething. I know it sounds soooooo early but they can sometimes feel the pain MONTHS before an actual tooth makes an appearance. DS sprouted his first one at 6 months and I know others have had their LO get them even earlier.
Those are just some options. And please don't take any of this personally. He loves you and this will all pass quickly and he will be 2 and you won't even be able to remember, ha.
My first two thought are reflux or teething.
My pediatrician explained teething this way to me - your baby is GROWING BONE (a painful process by itself). This bone is slowlly pushing its way through tissue and nerve endings. And it happens slowly. And you cannot see the new teeth for a while before they break the skin.
He said he didn't know how babies could stand such pain, because he likened it to birthing, but worse. (and I had an epidural).
And reflux is just plain nasty (had it when I was pregnant). I could see wanting to smack at people when mine flaired up.
I would suggest getting some baby oragel and trying it. If it works, you have your answer.
around 3months, my son started refusing to nap and acting as you described above. At 4 months we finally did a modified version of CIO b/c I was at a loss for what to do.
He quickly went back to normal after that and I do rock him to sleep now (I know I know he's 11 months.....I don't care, I enjoy and he won't let me/want me to do it forever!!!). GL it can be tough!
that is very common at that age- i think most of us have gone through something similar.
is his tummy tight?- when gisele went through that- she had gas. gripe water did wonders.
a lot of that behavior can also be attributed to over exhaustion (from lack of napping)- over exhaustion & over stimulation = a very unhappy baby.
I know Jackson's a little older than my Lucas, but we've had some similar situations. He's a nap fighter already, but I've had a day or two in the last few weeks that have been like that. He went from sleeping most of the night to fussing multiple times (not hungry, just unhappy) and then fighting me all day long. I'm glad I'm not the only mother being "abused" by her baby. I'm just glad his fingernails are short!
I'm afraid of him getting ear infections since he has such a runny/stuffy nose lately, but he's had no fever. I've given him infant Tylenol a few times with the ped's permission and that calmed him down almost right away. I'm not sure if it's that he's in some sort of pain or if it's almost a sugar water effect.
But you are definitely not alone!
First - LOVE the new pic of Gisele. What a cutie!
Saw the pedi today and he thinks it's reflux. He's having me reduce Jackson's intake from 5 to 5 1/2 to 4 ounces per bottle. He thinks Jackson started refusing to eat because of the pain.
We're going to try just that until Friday and if not better than that, he'll give us a prescription for Zantac.
We'll see. Another exhausting day with him today, though a bit better as far as his mood goes (slightly). Hoping tomorrow is even better.
