1st Trimester

Just had dating U/S - math doesn't add up - advice pls

They say I am measuring a week and a day earlier than I think I am and if this is the case than there is no medically possible way that an egg was fertilized to make this baby, sperm would have had to live about 14 days (we were not actively ttc so we only had sex once two days after my period and once two days before my next period was expected)

Is there any other reason that the baby could be measuring a whole week and a day earlier than we thought?  I thought I was 7w2d and she said I am 6w1d acording to measurments.  She (the tech) said they will change my due date based on this and I don't have another check up until june 3rd to talk to my dr about it.

I must have looked worried because she also said everything else looked healthy for a 6w baby heart measured right and was there beating away. (thank god for that)

what else could this mean? wwyd? any advice welcome

  • I'm going through something very similar. I go for my follow up u/s tomorrow. I'm terrified at what they're going to say. Dr said everything looked great, but I'm a nervous wreck. I'm hoping that for me I implanted late. I know when I ovulated, as I was taking OPKs and we only had sex twice (the day I got my +OPK and the next day) so I know I conceived then. BUT...when I took an HPT on 11dpo I got a negative, and at 14dpo I got a very faint positive. So, I'm hoping that I just implanted late. Good luck to you!!

  • At my first u/s, my RE thought I would be 7 weeks 4 days.  I was only about 5 weeks 1 day.  Every other u/s showed that everything was looking great! I hope you continue to have a healthy baby!

  • I wish I had any advice to give. I just wanted to say good luck with everything! I have my first ultrasound on Friday and I am terrified.
  • My first pregnancy was like that.  I was working nights, so we had sex one time.  Period.  I knew the day we conceived.  The baby kept measuring behind and finally we miscarried at about 9 weeks.  I hope for you that your outcome is better than mine.  But since you asked - measuring behind could be a sign of a pregnancy that is abnormal.  I have my fingers crossed for you.

  • you just reminded me that I had a blood test to confirm the pregnancy and the nurse who read the results said the levels matched with how many weeks I thought I was.

This happened to me with 2/3 of my mc's. I really hope this is not the case for you...GL

  • To be honest, I wouldn't be that concerned over it yet.  If everything else looks healthy, chances are everything is fine.

You will have another u/s at 20 weeks, and possibly another one before that.  They will then be able to give you more accurate estimations.

I was orginally measuring behind by 2 weeks, but by the time I had my 12 week u/s, everything was back on track.

    Good Luck!

  • Were you charting (taking your temp., checking CM, etc)?  If not then you really can't be sure when your period would have arrived, maybe you just ovulated late.  When doctors figure out how far along you are they assume ovulation on day 14, which is not the case for a lot of women.  Because I was charting I know that I ovulated on day 21 (latest ever for me).  Had I had an u/s to date the pregnancy I would have measured a week behind as well.  This is not an exact science, I'm sure everything is just fine.
  • Yes, it's me....

2 thoughts don't freak out about the blood test.  If you look up normal ranges for dpo they are HUGE ranges!  Also as pp said, you could have implanted late...I am pretty sure the clock doesn't start ticking w/ measurement until implantation so perhaps that is the explanation?  I think the time it takes for implantation can also varry greatly.

Try not to stress (easier said than done I know)

Luv ya and if you aren't doing this alone niether am I!  So hold tight to that apple seed and let's do this!

When you figure there is a small margin of error to begin with and adding in the possibility that you o'd a day later than you thought, it implanted late, it's hard to measure crl when there's not a crown or a rump, etc etc etc, it's all possible.

Don't worry about your day and be happy you have a healthy 6 week baby with a hb

This happened with my mc as well BUT I was behind by 2 weeks, not just 1.  I had an U/S today and my MW told me that the accuracy in the 1st tri is +/- 1 wk.  You are in that window, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. GL and stay strong:)
  • if I remember correctly ultrasounds that early can be off by like 2 weeks either way.. HTH
  • Not to be a Debbie Downer, but if you are sure your dates are right, then I'd say there is a strong possibility that this will not be a viable pregnancy.  I hope you get good news.  Good luck.

First trimester u/s are the most accurate u/s you can get throughout your pregnancy.  The further you are along, the more likely that measurements can be off.  At this stage of the pregnancy, unless the tech/doctor is a complete idiot, then it is a pretty accurate science.

  • My dr told me that even in early pregnancy, u/s can be up to a week off. So yes, it could be a week off and still be a viable pregnancy.

When I conceived my DS, I charted so I knew exactly the day I ovulated. At my 1st ultrasound, baby measured 5 days ahead then what I thought.

  • This happened to me with my 1st. I was measuring a week behind for the first couple months but I got an U/S every appointment so by the time I was 18 weeks I was actually 18 weeks. My doctor had told me a date later than what was based on my LMP but I told him I wasn't going to accept that and the due date was where we were keeping it (1/23) and my son was born on his due date!
  • OK so for those of you still following along, thank you.

March 29th - the 1st day of last period (April 4th was last day)

    April 6th - had sex

April 12th - day my math has me concieving (day 14) give or take

April 20th - Day I would have had to concieved acording to the O/S tech's new due date of 1.11.01 give or take

    April 24th - had sex

April 28th - BFP - very clear/dark on a pink two line test

May6th - blood test to confirm - nurse who read said hormone levels match the 5.5 weeks pregnant I thought I was then

    May 19th - Ultra sound  - measures 6w1d (should have been 7w2d)

There just wasn't sperm there to fertilize an egg if I ovulated late.  It would have had to live 14 days or so and I'm pretty sure that isn't possible.  My period or sex dates could have been off a day maybe two but not a whole week it just isn't possible.  According to the new math I would have had to have my period the 6th when I was having sex and we don't do that so I know its not right.  I was not charting so I don't know when I ovulated for sure I just know that if I did when they say I did, the egg could not have gotten fertilized. I am gonna call the doctor at my lunch but right now I have students (who yes I am ignoring while they work and I type) so I can't do anything but consult the bump's experts.

p.s. I have never had any indication that I am in anyway "high risk" I am blessed with a 23mo daughter with a complication free pregnancy and we got pregnant with her the first time we tried.  and although we weren't ttc this baby we did get pregnant the first time we had unprotected sex, even in a time I thought we were fairly safe (2 days after period was over).

  • I'm sorry.  I didn't want to read for the fourth time and then not reply.

There are a variety of possibilities - from the tech's experience to a tilted uterus, to an u/s measurement that's off just by milimeters, to a pretty average 5 day give and take in terms of measurements.

For me, my story did not have a happy ending.  In January, I went in at 7w1d.  Baby measured 6w1d with a heartrate.  We didn't get the exact speed of the hr, but it was over 100.  Because the baby was measuring behind, I went in 4 days later at 6w5d for a follow-up u/s.  Baby was measuring 5w7d and the heartbeat had ceased.  I had a medically managed miscarriage over the next three days.

There is a chance you could be OK.  Some babies are slow starters, babies grow in spurts and fits (just like regular humans,  you know?), uteruses are tilted, techs have bad eyes - there are all sorts of explanations I can give you to make you feel better.  Unfortunately, at this point, you're just going to have to wait for a follow-up ultrasound.  If you don't have one scheduled, please demand one.

If their numbers are right then that means that you got a BFP on 8 DPO.  I don't think that you ovulated late.  This has happened to me twice, and both ended in miscarriages.  While early ultrasounds are very accurate, I do believe that there is variability in the quality of the US tech.  Keep your hopes up....there are lots of stories like this that turn out positive.
