TTC after 35

Personal Serious ?: Who here has small boobies!

I am going for a mammogram on Friday. It's my first one. I'm nervous because 1) what if they find something (I do a monthly self exam and I just went to the OB and she didn't seem to find anything. I am high risk because my mom had breast cancer), and;  2) I have teeny tiny itty bitty boobies and I can not imagine how they are going to get anything smooshed to see anything.

So anyone else in the small booby department have a mammogram?  Tell me how it went please.

 Indifferent

TIA!

Re: Personal Serious ?: Who here has small boobies!

  • I am just the opposite, but I've heard that it's hard on little ones.  Good luck, I hope they don't find anything.  I did one a few years ago and was worried too - but it was no biggie.

  • My boobies aren't so big either (I'm not flat, but somewhere between A and B), and I too had been petrified... didn't help that a friend with really large ones admitted that bigger boobs fare better.  And even my mom always complained about how cold the machine was.

BUT, it wasn't bad for me at all.  I had to go "early" (age 37) for my first mammogram because my gynecologist wanted to double check a cyst I've had for years.  I put it off for another year because I was scared, which was stupid.

Edit: Everything was fine with my results though!

Sure there was a bit (a lot) of squeezing, but it just felt like a lot of pressure and suction. They do have to "manipulate" you a bit, so be prepared for that, but I felt no pain, and the plates were plastic I think, so they weren't cold.  The hardest thing was keeping still while holding my breath for a few seconds, since my heart was pounding and every beat pushed me back and forth.  But they apparently got what they needed.

I've had to go back a couple of times for follow ups (and I'm due for my next annual one now) and I really don't mind them.  I hope you will be able to say the same!

Good luck, and I hope my experience helps some!

  • I do!

I went for my first mammogram right before I started my first IVF.  First off, I strongly recommend that no one do this.

I figured it would be good to have a baseline mammogram before getting all pumped up on hormones.  That part is a good idea.  Hindsight I wish I wouldn't have waited until three weeks before starting an IF treatment.

It's amazing how they can still manage to get a picture when you feel so absolutely flattened out.  Because I am small breasted, my breasts have very little fat in them.  This causes very dense breast tissue and can result in some areas that are hard for the technician to read.   The Tech assured me to not be alarmed if I got a call back to have more pictures taken.  Well, as life would have it, I did get called back in.  Apparently since it was my first time they have no previous pictures to compare with, so they scrutinize everything.  I went back in for more pictures, then had a sonogram and was then instructed to schedule an appt with a surgeon for a biopsy.

Everything was fine. the biopsy was no big deal.  In my case the questionable area was a ruptured simple cyst.  Apparently my breasts are very cystic and I have a hunch they ruptured the cyst during the first mammogram.

Hopefully I am not scaring you, I just want you to be aware of the possibilities when it's your first time.  I was pretty unprepared for it all, plus my Mom and sister never had to repeat any tests so I was thinking the worst.  GL!

It's really not painful and it's over pretty quickly.

  • Me too!  Had my first one at the end of last year.  And I was scared to death, especially because I've heard it's super rough on us itty bitty titty girls!  LOL!  Well....it wasn't the worst pain I've ever had (my ectopic takes the cake in that department), but it wasn't gentle either!  The plates were plastic, so they weren't cold.  The tech did have to 'handle' by bbs to get them situated in the right place.  Then...as they were being smooshed, and I felt tears well up in my eyes...she says, don't move!  And I'm looking at her, like how in the hell is THAT even possible?!   Move???  I can't even breath...You've got me sandwiched in here.  LOL!

Anyhoo...I ended up having to go back, because I've had some moles removed and the one under my left breast showed 'something'...turned out it was nothing - I think it was just scar tissue.

    GL!!

  • I have had one twice. Neither was bad. I was just amazed they could pull on my tiny little boob and still make it into a square. It was not painful at all.

I am REALLY small and the only thing that hurt is it keep pressing my breast bone, not my boob!  There were so small they actually had to do an ultrasound to see anything, so I guess it depends on how small you are! :)  Good Luck!
  • Another small boobed girl here. I have had 2 now because (a) also high risk due to mom having breast cancer and (b) have lots of cysts that always cause the alarm bells to go off. They can never see much on the mammogram because my boobs are dense and they end up doing an u/s too. I didn't find the mammogram to be very painful at all. Frankly, the IUIs hurt me more than the mammograms!

Good luck. I am sure it will be fine.

  • Yeah, I have small boobies & somehow the managed to squeeze them in. I wouldn't call it painful but it was alot of pressure. I had to go back for an ultrasound of lefty because they wanted to rule something out, which turned out to be fine. They also wanted me to come back in 6 months but the pregnancy then nursing postponed that. So I need to schedule it for myself also. thanks for the reminder.

  • I've had several mammograms and always thought they weren't that bad.  For some reason though, the last one I had a few months ago was really painful.  This woman pulled my poor booblets like taffy, smushing the dear life out of them.  Not fun.  Maybe the experience is greatly dependent on the technician doing the testing.  Anyway, hope your experience isn't too bad.  Good luck!
