Tummy/Floor time?

DD isn't super fond of tummy time. Just curious...what do you do for your LO's tummy time? Just lay them on the floor with one toy or several toys? Do you lay them on a mat that has stuff attached? I lay there with DD and play and I also try to give her time to herself, either way she doesn't seem to interested.

  • I did a few things when DS hated tummy time:

-I put his mat down, which has a mirror. My son is vain and loves to stare at his reflection.

-I put the tv on sometimes (gasp!). The colors distract him.

He loves to try to crawl now (unsuccessfully) so it's gotten easier in the past few weeks.

Coraline just started to handle tummy time a little better. I lay her on her play mat and push the toys that normal are over her to in front of her. Then I put her mirror toy on one side and some musical toys on the other side. And when she gets bored I'll lay down with her. That way she gets alone time and interactive time.

The best tummy time is when I'm watching the news. I know. Bad mom, tv is a developement stunter, blah blah. It's only a couple of minutes and she totally lifts her whole upper body to watch the moving pictures.

  • I have a king sized blanket on our living floor.  On it is about 10 different toys and also a play mat with bars/hanging toys.  DS rolls all over the place, so the bigger, the better.  I rarely get down with him, as he is pretty independent and me being there doesn't seem to make a different to him.

Maybe you need some new toys, maybe an upgrade to older age ones?  Is she interested in toys otherwise?

My DS LOVES Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  Its like baby crack or something.  There is a looped video on youtube with the theme songs, lasting about 5 minutes.  He will hold himself up, perfectly still, just to watch that stupid video.  Other videos are mildly interesting, but that particular one is just addicting.  He won't take his eyes off of it.

I started playing that video once a day when DS was horrible with tummy time.  I think the 5 minutes or so really helped his strength.
